IGNITION STAYS ON

Can anyone please help, i have just discovered that my ignition stays on after the key is taken out.
this only happens if the footbreak is pressed while turning the ignition off, as soon as you let go of the footbreak the engine cuts out.
i dont have any warning lights coming up on the dash eg engine management light.
i must say it is rather strange for this to happen. ive googled for a answer the closest i get is to it is a fuel pressure relief valve on the fuel rail which opens and releases fuel back to the tank when you kill the engine, and sometimes it gets sticky or is slow to react and engine carrys on running by the pressure left there.
The only problem i have is a cannot locate the pressure relief valve and the above diagnostic says it only carrys on running on the pressure that is left. my car carrys on running until the footbreak is released.

These cars are susceptible to unpredictable behaviour if the carpet in the drivers footwell gets wet - there are a mutitude of electrical connections under there. Check the carpet / under the carpet.

Just to confirm, are you saying it turns off correctly if you don't press the footbrake and it will keep going indefinitely if you do press the footbreak?

fuel pressure regulator mine used to do this i took the regulator off and gave it a clean its located on the side of the high pressure fuel pump

I thought that ran on for a few seconds, this one sounds like it'll run indefinitely until the foot brake is released Could be damp connectors under the carpet again - viewtopic.php?f=10&t=12118 but it doesn't sound like the usual madness.

if its running with the foot pedal pressed down that would have to be faulty electrics
mine ran for a few seconds after the key was out the ignition as steve said check under the carpet check for broken wires aswell

Yes thats right i have since discovered that this whole scenario only happens when the lights are on and that the break lights are constantly lit when the side lights or beams are on.
to make things worse when i press the brake the front side lights also come on.

This description suggests unintended contact between the stop light and side light circuits. I'd need to pour over the diagrams a bit to help narrow it down, but IIRC there are two stop light fuses, one for each side of the car (and the high level light is joined to one of the others). You could narrow it down by removing the fuses one by one and both together, carefully noting what happens in each case.

If the problem is related to one side only, I'd suspect damage to the stop / tail light wiring around the tailgate hinges or possibly a problem in the relevant rear light unit. If it's still there with both fuses out, we're back to pedal switch etc. and looking for wet carpets......

Hi guys, Dogs life was absolutely right the stop light and side lide bulb was at fault but thankfully not the circuit, i discovered that the filliment in the bulb had arced, consequently welding the stop filiment with the side light filiment, something i have never seen before.
i couldnt believe this had caused the stop lights to stay on constantly the front side lights to come on when i brake. Also the engine to stay on while removing the key and keeping the break pedal pressed.(what this had to do with the ignition i do not know).
it shows to look for the obvious prior to stripping your car down. as stated my Dogs life i took out the fuse first which then stopped the problem, i then disconnected the tailgate lights one at a time and accidently stumpled across the dodgy bulb as it came out.
By the way does anyone know how to add pictures on this site, i took a picture of the bulb which clearly shows the problem on the bulb.

Wow! Good find Presumably the side light feed was going back down the brake light feed and making the engine feed live. Nicely diagnosed there Dogslife!

Hi Everyone,
Modern car, but old fault. This was common with cars which switched the brake lights on when the handbrake was on. With the lights on, duff bulbs would feed the ign from the lighting circuit! My A 35 van was a real pian with this fault. (Said it was an old fault) !
