Hi to all ....

Post by kim »

Hello to all of you .........Just purchased myself a 406 1.8 family in my favourite colour , taken me ages to find out what the colour was. Thought it was jade green , but a code of M07T KRTC brings up como green , vin VF38FLFYExxxxxxxx, hope that's right.
First peugeot since my 505 family in the 80s.that car , I think it was a 2.1 or 2.2 petrol served us well.
First impressions should have bought a bigger engine, dull as ditch water. Secondly The clutch....I will end up walking funny with one big left muscled leg. Gearbox is quit notchey.
Handbrake ,right to the top ,once on, pinging warning noise comes on occasionally ??

Plans....full service and bosh 4 point plugs tomorrow.
Gearbox change oil and add some molly slip.....once the Haynes arrives.
Gradual work around the body ,to bring back to standard.

Please anyone, clutch...make smoother? take up not so near the top and reduce the judder? and is there any way to lighten ,as I have a disability and am going to find the clutch hard work. Look forward to a new challenge, I love little projects... Kim

Hiya Kim,

I have the same engine in my saloon - it's not the liveliest of motors, but it depends what you've traded in to get to your 406 I guess. I got rid of a 1.2 Clio Mk. 1, and I found mine to be almost sporty in comparison...

The clutch is heavy in most 406s. I went to a track day for my 30th this year and drove a Lamborghini Murcielago - the instructor told me beforehand that the car was a lot of work to drive, and that the clutch was particularly heavy. It's got nothin' on the 406 clutch pedal... Not too sure if you can adjust it, or if you can, how - I'm not very mechanically-minded, but one of the other guys here should be able to help you.

As for the handbrake - this is widely regarded as the worst feature on the 406 - it seems to be particularly unreliable or ineffective. There is a little switch in there though which, under certain conditions, fails - so you get the "Brake fluid level low" warning appearing on the MFD on the centre console accompanied by that irritating little beep. There's a how-to in the knowledge base for fixing this little fault.

Welcome along!

Cheers
Graeme

Hi Kim, welcome aboard :cheesy:

Hmm, let's see...
PAINT TYPE METALLIC PAINTWORK
BODY COLOUR PAINT COMO GREEN
built on Fri 7 Jul 2000
at Sochaux France

Handbrake depends which it is, the parts catalogue says either disks or drums ( ) so you could start by adjusting the cables (we probably have a how to for that somewhere) and see what happens. Ignore Haynes, pretend it's a Mini and adjust almost all the play out. While you're under there have a squint what sort you have so we can better advise you. Not sure about the pinging, does any message come up?

The clutch is cable, I'd think auto-adjusting so it might be stuck (anyone?)

Thanks guys, this has been the warmest welcome I have ever received from any forum.
I will post replies to the questions ,soon as it stops raining and I get the chance to have a start on the car. Shame about the colour availability ,have to put up with the oh so helpful expensive Halfrauds to make up a few cans, once I get over the paint code thing with them.
Clutch...will have a check whether cable? needs a oil/greasing or can you????.
Just moved from a 2000 2lit Mondeo hatch to the 406, but I do have a 2009 1.9td Vectra design as well.....for the longer runs.

The 406 LX has 137k on the clock and he said belts changed at 95k , all old mots and receipts for the work done to go through them. No service history though.
No rust except for the front edge to the bonnet and rad scuttle, but plenty of car park assaults and batteries. I will wait for warm dry days again before starting on those.

Just noticed the clarion radio on/off switch has no effect , but the stalk works all, but off ... a common fault?? Also the speakers distort fairly easily ,just checking out the ICE pages.

Well it looks like I am going to have some fun, look foreward to sharing the 406 experiance  thanks Kim

I'm not sure if a clutch cable will take kindly to lubrication, it'll have a nylon insert that'll wear out very quickly if you annoy it. Maybe you could see if that helps for a while and then change it. Other than that it'll be the clutch cover, seems like a lottery if they come light or heavy though.

Does the volume control on the radio work? I managed to break the front panel circuit board in mine, everything that end stopped working but (after some very bad soldering  ) I managed to get the on/off switch to work.

Hi Steve,
The volume does not work from the switch it just spins...I think I am going to leave well alone for the present. They units do seem to sell cheap enough on e bay though.

I like to keep original on stereos if I can, especially when they are tied to the displays as these Clarions. On the Mondeo you can buy a second-hand unit and slot in.. enter the units code and away you go..........If the code is missing several people on e bay for a pound will send the right 4 digit code. Any Idea how the 406 takes a replacement? cheers Kim

It needs to be coded to the car by Pug, it's not as cheap as the Mondeo either :(

Hi Steve
have now read through some of the ICE sections history on the subject, see what you mean, you can see why lots replace the head units with a fascia plate conversion. I have done this in the past but its the extra stalk controller expense you don't need.
Looks like rain for the next 3 days on the computers little forecast pictures ,oh well it will give me the chance to plan to get it right , Kim :)

Hi Graeme
Thanks for the information, its a big car for a 1800. As mine is a Friday car (thanks to Steve for that) hope not too many problems with it.
July 2000 would that mean, a 115 BHP 16v engine ?? kim

Being right hand drive, Peugeot had to route the clutch cable back over to the 'designed side' taking a route over the nice hot eggsauce manifold.......the cable's lubrication dries over time and gives a stiff operation and awkward gear-change as a result.

I would change the cable first.

Welcome btw :cheesy:

As far as I know it is something that a competent DIY'er with a decent set of tools and a Haynes manual could do........famous last words?
