need to replace our 406

Post by andyh »

Our lovly v6 saloon , the best car that ever had ! has (says my mechanic) had its day. We need another 406 , and need to find a better place than the local scrapyard for the much loved old girl .

Is there anyone out there selling a 406 ?
any manual saloon would be of intrest around the london south east . ( unfortunatly the sensible one in our house will not let me have another V6 )

I am also seeking guidance on what to do with the previously mentioned V 6 ( somthing went bang ,now it will not run)
The local scrappy offerd me £100 , its got 4 new tyres on it ! on good alloys you would think that they alone would be worth that .

you could break it and get more for it but have you a place to do it?have you the time/skill /tools to strip it? can you get rid of whats left?
a idea you might want to consider is a scrap metal yard, find out how much scrap is, remove all the bits you can sell, get a mate to tow you down, then remove wheels and sell them.

For whatever reason, a car is worth a hell of a lot less than the sum of its parts. Breaking it could net you a very tidy stack of cash, it's merely a question of whether or not you have the time, inclination, tools and facilities required.

There's something in the airbox that lets go and gets jammed somewhere (mjb on here knows more) but I'm not sure that causes the problem you've had.

Something 'going bang' doesn't sound to good and possibly a snapped cam belt??

Breaking it for parts is messy and time consuming and the most valuable bit on yours is the engine :(

Leather seats are probably worth a fair bit, as are the ECU+BSI(if it's a D9). Easy things of decent value to plunder are the crankshaft pulley, aux belt tensioner, coil pack, throttle body, radiator, display (especially if it's 2002> with satnav), instrument panel, stereo+changer, climate control unit, wing mirrors, bonnet, and if it's a D8, the clutch hydraulics. Get the mechanic to evacuate the gas from the AC system and you've got the pipework, condenser and compressor which should net a good few quid.
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

If it's a D9 saloon and it has black leather seats (or part-leather seats) in pretty good shape, I'm interested
