Random speedometer problem.
The speedo on my d9 is suffering with an intermittent fault. Sometimes when driving the speed clock just stops working, it drops to 0 then after a few minutes starts to read the speed as normal again.
There doesn't seem to be any pattern to when it stops, it does it at all speeds and it doesn't seem to matter how long the car has been running for.
Anyone got any ideas what could be causing this??
Thanks
Mike

Re: Random speedometer problem.
could be a loose wire at the back, the d9s like mine are all electric speedometers so if you have any problem like that its electrics causing it, but if you want to buy a replacement speedometer unit here is the link to one im selling:

Re: Random speedometer problem.
I have had a look at the clocks. I cant see anything that looks like it either shouldnt be there or looks broken.
Does anyone have any other ideas what this could be? Is it going to be that i'll have to change the clocks? If i do this how easy is it to get the mileage re-set?

Not easy, maybe not possible? If you change the clocks you will wind up with the two mileages added together.Mike84 wrote:I have had a look at the clocks. I cant see anything that looks like it either shouldnt be there or looks broken.

Difficult to know how to narrow this one down.
PP2000 can put all the gauges through a test sequence - this might show up an intermittent speedo, if it's happening regularly enough and you do the test enough times.....
Worth checking the vehicle speed sensor in the gearbox isn't loose/damaged/dodgy connections.
If you have the trip computer, you might be able to spot the loss of speed signal by continually resetting the average speed / watching the readout.

Re: Random speedometer problem.
This one can be dodgy soldering on the back of the cluster or the speedo control box behind the glove box.
I'd go for the soldering first, this cured mine. Run every joint on the pcb.

I think it affects them all, certainly pre com2000.dogslife wrote:Isn't that a D8 only thing, Teamy?

Re: Random speedometer problem.
The box behind the glovebox is, I think it's just ML5 boxes an' all, so that's 2.1td, tubby and V6 then (plus 2.2? I forget and am too lazy to look it up
)

No hold on, they might have the ML5 but I don't think the chocolate control box made it into D9s (but I'm still too lazy to look
)

Re: Random speedometer problem.
thanks guys, i'll have a look over the weekend. Just one other thing i've spotted, the mileage and trip computer stop counting up when the speedo has stopped working.
Dont know if this might help identifying the problem...

So nothing's getting any information. Possibly the transducer on the gearbox

Re: Random speedometer problem.
If the D9's do have the control box behind the glovebox, then this would be the first port of call to replace as the symptoms you're having are exactly the same as what I had on my 2.1TD D8, and this was the box at fault. I liberated one from a local scrappy, in fact I liberated both the ones I could find, but only one of them worked.
