Re: Is my 406 as bad as I think?
Ok my dads a paramedic, and his current rrv car is a fraud focus estate which hes using because the 2007 skoda octavia scout is away getting some complicated communication thing for gps tracking and control of the new blue lights, but the fords a 2002 tdci or tddi i dont know the year should help, but anyhow its got about the same mileage as my pug, and my dad would recommend the peugeot any day over the focus, and hes not biased towards peuegot like my grampa my dad is a japanese only car buyer. but he doesnt like the focus which does nothing but break down gasket, fuel pump and clutch, and it has its fair share of electrical problems and worse still its not as well protected from the rust as my 406 the back wheel arches are as strong as tissue. Quinn direct insurance i dont know if you get it over there, or if they are still doing new quotes was the cheapes for a long time.

Bet it's been driven hard though? I've gotten out of the hard driving stage now, and I love just relaxing and just cruising. I never do more than 75mph on the motorway now and I'm dying to get cruise controll of some sort406executiveHDI wrote:Ok my dads a paramedic, and his current rrv car is a fraud focus estate which hes using because the 2007 skoda octavia scout is away getting some complicated communication thing for gps tracking and control of the new blue lights, but the fords a 2002 tdci or tddi i dont know the year should help, but anyhow its got about the same mileage as my pug, and my dad would recommend the peugeot any day over the focus, and hes not biased towards peuegot like my grampa my dad is a japanese only car buyer. but he doesnt like the focus which does nothing but break down gasket, fuel pump and clutch, and it has its fair share of electrical problems and worse still its not as well protected from the rust as my 406 the back wheel arches are as strong as tissue. Swapping Bernard for a 2001 Exec with cruise probably comes somewhere in between......
(Then there's the levver & the extra 10 mpg, plus the all-important armrests)

Yep - Quit your bitchin'...
50k a year is nuts - catch a bus or do some walking! Oh and you will save a pharkload on Diesel - which then in turn can be spent on insurance...Win Win if you ask me!

Re: Is my 406 as bad as I think?
not the bus thats a worst case senario, busses are awful, though its hard to beat a good old bike, peugeot will sort you out for one of them. The focus my dad drives isnt driven too hard, not when compared with the skodas the ambulance service now use, the focus was actually just something for station officers to drive about in but now its passing its last days as an rrv car. Driving hard does wear out a car quick, the older skoda scout with 80k miles has already had new driveshafts put into the front and the head gasket had to be done but they are carring a lot of extra wheight.
Cruise control is great i have it in my exec but it has a small idiosyncrasy it only works on alternatite trips. You be on the motorway one way and it works fine and it is a great cruise control because the speed can be adjusted on it, but on the way home it just decides not to hold the speed, and i have discovered that if i get to somewhere turn the car off and wait precisely 2 minuites it works again. I really need to check it out but just havent even bothered, the airbag lights still on thats how little ive done.

Even for me and my 5 mile commute every day, it'd be cheaper to drive my 19mpg V6 than pay £7.20/day in bus fares

The HDI uses electronic cruise control (as opposed to the ES9J4 V6's pneumatic system), so it should be either on or off and there's only a couple of ways it can really go wrong:406executiveHDI wrote:Cruise control is great i have it in my exec but it has a small idiosyncrasy it only works on alternatite trips. 1. Switch on the clutch pedal
2. Switch on the brake pedal
3. Stalk switches
The first two are the common failure points, and as it works sometimes I'd say you should be able to test them on the move. When your cruise control fails to work, stick your foot under the clutch pedal and pull it up. If cruise still doesn't work, try again with the brake pedal.
Alternatively you could get on your knees (not on the move

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Re: Is my 406 as bad as I think?
Mine used to take an occasional cruise control 'holiday' - always worked on the next journey.
Thoroughly checked the switches several times to no avail.
I suspect it's a mux / comm2000 glitch, though I can't explain why it's OK now, (unless all the other little digital participants are just more of a harmonious team since they sent the additive ecu to Coventry).

Re: Is my 406 as bad as I think?
thats it, its working after 2 minuites of the car being off which gets me, the clutch and brake pedals are ok, and ive pulled them up and looked at them, poked them with a screwdriver, talked to them, then took the switches out, put them back in and the control still goes for a cruise every other journey. Where do i look now?
