Re: Merc advice?
dam right there aint no replacement for displacement, just do it right and get the vxr8 with the supercharger, i recall one overtook my peugeot, and that exhaust note is so loud that it deafened rod stewart at volume 15 with the loudness and bass set to max. Its louder than a plane, and they can be switched back to quiet mode.
Re: Merc advice?
Nah, VXR8 Bathurst, did you here the whine of the supercharger when it was on Top Gear? Amazing

Re: Merc advice?
thats the one yip just didnt want to muck up the spelling of bathhurst, its the only decent car vauxhall makes and thats because they dont make it, id actually just put the holden badges back onto a vxr8 if i had one which is something i unfortunatley cant say, but i know of 3 in the local area, and you can hear them blasting up the main road even though i live about a mile away from it.

Let's be honest here406executiveHDI wrote:dam right there aint no replacement for displacement, just do it right and get the vxr8 with the supercharger, i recall one overtook my peugeot like I was going backwards, and that exhaust note is so loud that it deafened rod stewart at volume 15 with the loudness and bass set to max. Re: Merc advice?
now you put it up like that it doent really make sense what i said, like i was going backwards wtf is that about, and i was the one who actually typed that, wow. But anyhow the vxr8 is loud, very very loud.
But anyhows i have to ask again what was captain jacks car remapped to, because if i got the 140bhp ecotune would it cause the same issues

It's just a common expression that means the car that overtook you was going so much faster than you it felt like you were going in a reverse direction
I don't think he's stuck it on a rolling road to find out but it's worked fine on other cars, perhaps it just didn't suit his because his car wasn't the actual car that was mapped. You could ask your tuner what he reckons, if there's a chance the car could be undrivable I'll bet he'll want to know about it.

No idea what the map file is remapped to. It's far too much though for the internals to take. Very quick (think 150bhp TDI Golf) but it was destroying the clutch before my eyes. I don't know what a proper remap would be like - I guess I could try and drive before buying it - some companies do that.

Re: Merc advice?
ah right you did it yourself, i wouldnt like a 150bhp golf, my uncles is 100bhp and i had to drive it for him to get a door resprayed and my god that thing cant go round corners, its quick yes but i put that down to a lack of refinement making it feel faster, round corners it was not very safe feeling and tended to understeer a bit, unlike my cars which although it leans does go through the corners superbly. I dont think a 150bhp golf would be safe it coulnt handle it in the bends
Re: Merc advice?
The Mk.4 Golf goes round corners MUCH better than any 406. Sure a good 406 can take individual corners faster but string a few together and the 406 is left wallowing as it just can't change direction anywhere near as quickly as the Golf and its vastly shorter wheelbase... Understeer is bad on both cars, a lot worse on the 406 (XU10J2TE and ES9J4) than the Golf (AJM), but the Golf is much easier to get oversteering - either handbraked or lift-off
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Re: Merc advice?
i just dont agree having drove this golf, and comparing it to my 406. Steering feel and feedback also feels better and more real than that of the golf. Then again i have a strut brace and thats what im comparing with, but even still my car went through bends well before it. But for comfort the 406 has it in the bag without discussion its vastly smoother than the golfs over rough surfaces
Re: Merc advice?
I have the V6 coupé - the best handling 406 variant with strut brace by design and sportier suspension with a sweet sweet engine to boot. However it's a bloody heavy car which wallows everywhere in the twisty stuff, and the overly-light PAS seriously kills feedback under about 70mph which makes it less than perfect for enjoying roads406executiveHDI wrote:i just dont agree having drove this golf, and comparing it to my 406. The 406 is a great comfortable, reliable cruiser, and wicked fun on a track, but the Golf has more responsive steering, better braking ability, a better stiffer chassis, better seats (for hard driving - it's the GT leathers), a love for oversteer, less stability and it's just SO much more chuckable.
Driving round windy Peak District roads is so much more fun in the Golf, but there's only one of my cars I'd take to, and drive around the Nürburgring, and that's the one with the V6...

Re: Merc advice?
the diesel engine seems to make the steering in my car nice and wheighty. are you on about a mk4 or 5 golf, because i will agree the mk5 handles well. but there is absoluley no way this standard golf tdi of my uncles could outhandle the 406 the steering in it feels wheighty like a renault clio but still doesnt really feel connected, i suppose the gt version would be a different beast, still though theres always the trusty old 306 to lean back on for some good hanling.

How old is the suspension again?mjb wrote:...which wallows everywhere in the twisty stuff
Needs some sort of adjustable bypass valve......overly-light PAS
Perhaps it's because the 406 is heavier, hold on...
406 V6 coupe - 1458 kg
Golf whatever TDi something - 1425 kg

Re: Merc advice?
Comfort takes absolute priority for me in my car with the driving i do from armagh to dublin i need something that i can get out of refreshed the 406 does that, my dad nearly swapped me his blob primera with the lpg kit, but it leaves me with a sick feeling not because of its looks or anything witty but whatever way the seat is set it pushes my back in a certain way that makes me feel a bit queezy. And that golf the seats are indeed supportive but my back after 10 minuites was in agony. In the clio it had bucket shaped seats which meant my shoulders were sort of curled in, and you were forced to have your legs tight together which made them cramped but also it was difficult to reach the pedals, and there was no support for your back. I also had a test drive in a C6 and its seats are good in the back they can recline, the front seats are also nice and wide, the C6 though over bumps was dissapointing i was expecitng total isolation from bumps but it was just as good as my 406, i hear though the hydropneumatic works best at higher speeds, everything else about the C6 was great, its just such a beautiful car.
