Random speedometer problem.

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

i would relate this problem to dry solder joints on the clocks circuit board,

mine do the same every 6 months,

take clocks out and get soldering iron on the joints, you dont need any solder you just need to touch the joints so they join back together,

there easy to spot, you will see a ring around the joint were it soders to the board ////

could be wrong but thats what i would do 1st

I had this problem on 2 of my 1997 td.on mine the the rev counter and fuel gauge would wave about also but a smack on the top of the dash sometimes calmed it down.
Ok this how i fixed mine i resolderd every joint on the clocks which made no change, then i pulled the clocks apart and inside there is some pins which slot into the speedo fuel gauge ect.
I carefully put a slight bend in these pins using a couple of pairs of snipe nosed pliers, carefully does it a friend of mine snapped one.
Stuck it back together and job done, this worked great for around 2 years then the problem came back so i repeated the above and its worked great for another year or so.
I think the contact between the pins and their holes become poor over time and the slight bend in the pins corrects this.
Hopes this helps.

This is happening my D9 HDi 90 atm, The speedo sensor on the gearbox looks ok but I'm pretty sure its the source of the problem, after disconnecting the plug and lifting it out of the gearbox for inspection, i put it back in and reconnected it. It worked fault free for 2 whole days and then stopped working again. My dad had a similar problem with our 106 and a new sensor unit cured it.

This looks like the right sensor unit, is it a decent price?
