oops!

Post by sirwiggum »

Sorry I haven't been about in a while, here is a cautionary tale from a complete novice

Wanted to change the oil on the 406.

Got the 10w40, new sump washer and filter, raring to go.

Jacked up, located a sump plug, undid, some oil coming out, great stuff.

Left it for half an hour, came back, didn't look like 5 litres in the basin, must be a case of perspective?

Oil filter off, lots of oil coming out of this. Strange. Must be the pug way of doing things.

Sump plug back on, new oil filter, 4.7 litres of oil back in, check dipstick. Oil up the dipstick. Hmmmm, must need time to settle?

Test drive. OH NO! Awful lot of smoke coming out the exhaust   luckily near a friends who knows about these things, pull into his drive. Jack up again, he takes *2* basinful of oil out, fills the 5 litre oil bottle up with half and puts into the engine. Strange, was there a blockage at the sump plug? Why so much oil? Diesel leaking into the sump? Bad injector?
Test drive again, seems better.

Why is 3rd gear making a weird whining sound?

Couldn't sleep last night, started thinking, drained oil, too much oil, gearbox bad. That sump plug the 2nd time was pointing to the rear, the 1st time the sump plug was pointing downwards

1am surfing for peugeot engine pictures confirmed my suspicions, I had drained the wrong oil plug!

So today up to halfrauds, 2 litre bottles of gearbox oil 75w80, airbox out, breather nut off with a wheelbrace, 1.8 litres of gearbox oil in.

Gearbox whine gone. On the plus side, it feels like a brand new gearbox! :cheesy:

Fresh 10w40 and sump plug washer purchased, take 2 this weekend. 8)

Girlfriend wont let me do the oil on her Fiesta though, doesn't trust me!

Yep, drained the gearbox and filled up the engine! :cheesy:

Epic fail on my part.

I'm actually surprised that nothing catastrophic happened between running 10 litres of oil and an empty gearbox!

2 sump plugs on the XUDT? Is it an HGV? :D

Have you bought more oil and changed it? Or did you just put whatever come back out the engine back in?
Might be worth going to get some cheap oil? I use £14 Asda oil and change it every 3k.
You're better off using cheap oil and changing it regularly than good oil and changing it now and again :)

We put half or what was in it back in it, so now it has 50% old and 50% new mix.

Yes I have fresh engine oil I bought with the gearbox oil, so will do another oil change this weekend, halfrauds own 10w40 diesel oil.

Hopefully the right sump plug this time!

I always wondered why I had 2 sump plugs, now I know.

On a serious note how often should you change gear box lubricant if at all ? Mine can be a little notchy going into gear but I put it down to the age of the clutch.

thats funny for i changed the oil in the summer, and i wasnt sure where the sump plug was, but i just felt about and got the right one this is without jacking up the car, then the oil poured out into a dish which somehow i got under there. Then my uncle come over and told me that i need a new sump plug washer. So i had to use my grandas polo sdi to drive around looking for one, but eventually did, got 10 for £1, but the oil must have had about over an hour to drain, easilly could have been the gearbox oil.
But thats funny because round here i hear 2 307s that make a real odd whine, like the alfa 75 jeremy drove in that alfa edition of top gear, they must be on low oil.
But thats good to know i wouldnt mind freshening up the gearbox.

The million dollar question:

How much oil shavings and the like, came out of the box when you fully drained it? :cheesy:

My car was away yesterday at the mechanics for its pre mot checks. And a good mechanic who doesnt know how a computer works but can fix a car, thats why he still has an old renault 21 on the go. But anyhow i got two new front droplinks and a similar bar for the back, the handbrake tightned (but i think its been untightened after i tested it), a coolant flush, headlights aligned, all the other checks for the mot and the gearbox oil was changed but it didnt really need it. All for £80 which really is a bargain, and the new droplinks seem to make a difference, and its underside was inspected for rust and that got a clean bill of health not a pick of it.
