Welcome to the 406 Owners Club (406oc.co.uk and pug406.co.uk). If you havn't registered, you can post in here, and find out what the site is all about!
New P406 owner here. I've just picked up a 2003 2.0 diesel auto, and looking for warnings/advice/helpful hints and perhaps even some feel-good stories...

Warnings - keep an eye on the steering column stalks and electrics in general, as being a late-model 406, yours will be equipped with the marvelous COM2000 unit and fully-multiplexed wiring. If any electrical gremlins appear, it's best to try and get them sorted sooner rather than later.
Advice - as advised by mjb, automatic gearboxes are very picky about the type and level of oil in them. If you find your auto box being a bit unhappy, that's the first thing to check is the condition and level of the oil. Also, your tyre pressure is important in a big car like the 406 - should be around 34 PSI - you'd be amazed how much the fuel economy can be improved by this simple check!
Feelgood stories - why tell you ours, when you can have your own just by driving it! Your new car should give you many many miles of smooth, comfortable, economic motoring. The HDi engine (in your car) is generally very reliable, and if you desire a bit more grunt out of it, can typically be remapped to provide a significant boost in both performance (higher BHP and more torque) and economy.

Not many auto's on here, or 'slushmatics' as I like to call them
I think if I'd just bought one I'd be very tempted to have a word with a reliable local Auto-Box specialist about a fluid change (and the filter I think).
Thinking about it, an Auto should be a lot kinder on the old lower engine mount problem (about which there have been many tales).
