intermittant engine cut out

Post by bigknickers »

Hello all you experts from a newboy..........I have a 51 plate 406 110 diesel estate with 87K on the clock. Twice today it has cut out while I'm driving along, however, it restarts and runs perfectly (serviced in June). I searched your previous posts to discover the likely cause could be the 15 pin brown relay in the ECU box...........only trouble is............I don't have one in the box, what's me next step forward?

Have you had a diagnostic test? That would hopefully (amongst other complete jibberish they throw out) maybe put out a useful code.

Next time it cuts out check the in tank fuel pump , turn the ignition on
but dont start the car and listen to hear a buzzing noise at the rear of car
if you can't then pump not working .

Yes, sounds like the in-tank fuel pump or maybe the crank position sensor - the pump's the favourite.

The car is running perfect at the moment, but I know it'll do it again soon, thanks lads, the in tank pump is at the top of me list then, Disco, sorry to be a plank, but where is the headlight height adjuster?.........I assume it's in the engine bay behind the headlight? I also wanted to get a diagram of the fusebox layout seeing as the one in the Haynes manual is wrong, any idea where I could get one?

it was Doggy who told you about that bit.

I think he is on about the bit next to the switch IN the car its a bit of plastic trim that pops off with a little persuasion from a small poky device i reckon, but i could be wrong i never had mine off to look and now i drive something else so cant even check for you Im sure doggy will be along soon and put us right.

Ah, the power of Avatars! :P

As Disco says, the headlight height adjuster should be just to then right of the steering column, ( by your right knee).

Oops, silly me, this computer lark aint easy is it? The good lord has now made the problem much easier, cos the fuel gauge now shows a permanently full tank, so I'll bung in a new fuel tank pump which hopefully will fix two faults with one part :cheesy: from reading previous posts, it looks like I'm changing the pump at an early stage of it's failure, which should avoid a trail of pump debris flowing into the lines and mucking up other parts!

Ah, it's trying to tell you something :)

To be fair I don't think anyone on here has ever known of any 'bits' breaking away from the pump.......
