Off to look at a coupe tomorrow

Post by highlander »

Hello,

I'm going for a little run in the car to look at a 406 Coupe 2.2 petrol tomorrow. Allegedly just 3000-ish 2.2 coupes made worldwide, so a bit of a rare one.

Does anyone know anything specific I should look out for with this particular beast, other than the usual suspects (water ingress, electric/electronic issues, rust, mayo under the oil filler cap)?

Cheers
Graeme

Could be any colour Dai, could be S or SE.

Check ALL the electrics. If you get a brake fault on the screen when you start up, it's probably a false alarm, caused by starting the car too quick. Check both door windows drop slightly when you open the door

If it's an SE:
check the sat nav (if you want it)
check the heated seats work.
Check the seats move forward when you pull them over to get in the back.
Check the mirrors fold (by twisting the mirror knob towards the back of the car)

Mechanicals are same as 406, so the usual checks there you'd do on any car.

Just check all the electrics, every switch and button.

Get a good one and you won't regret it.

Hey guys, I'm buying her! (the good news) It's a Rosso Red 2002 2.2 SE, full black leather. All the electricals and mechanicals work (yes, even the COM2000 unit is immaculate). There's the usual fraying on the piping on the bolsters where people's arses have been brushing up against them getting in and out. 16" Hoggar alloys, sweet. The front bumper plus some of the piping behind it was recently replaced when the lady hit a badger (the badger was worse off), plus they replaced the mid-section of the exhaust and the throttle actuator too. Full service history indeed - it's a thick bundle of papers - every MOT certificate and invoice for work carried out (including Autoglass having successfully repaired a stone chip on the windscreen).

The bad news - some total asshole ran his van into my saloon while I was out on my test drive - the right-side repeater light is broken and there's a dent there (that's where he hit) and there's a huge scrape from front wing through to the rear of the rear door. My colour-coded wing mirror is also scratched. And then he f*cked off without leaving any insurance details - so I'm out of pocket         Can't drive in the dark until the indicator is replaced, and then I got to find out how much the bodywork and paint repairs will cost me. Can't bloody believe it.

Take it as an omen. Get the coupe & just sell the saloon as is on Ebay. Funnily enough, my cars usually find a way of punishing me when I decide to replace them too.

Hey, good news on the coop, bad news on the saloon :| I'm with Victor Meldew there, flog as is and move on (unless you were counting on the cash from it to pay for the coop...)

I remember my dad delivering a car (a Peugeot 204 no less!) and having someone cut him up on a roundabout and put a nice size dent in it (the buyer still had it too!). And my mate's family, when they lived in the States, they sold their car because they were moving back to GB but had the use of it for the last few days. Guess what happened to it on the last day

Just be glad it was your old car rather than your new one that was hit. saloon parts are a lot cheaper adn easier to come by.

Glad you've found a good one anyway. It was only a week away, so coupe ownership is still very fresh to me.

New car (not my photos, I'll get more of them when I get the car) - the photos don't do it justice; the paintwork is immaculate:

My poor saloon - I'm going to see how much it'll cost to repair her; I had hoped to put some of the money from her sale into the Coupe but this may have to wait. Here goes:

Unless you (or a good friend) can do the bodywork yourself, you'll just end up losing out. The final figure you'd get fixing it & selling it repaired is usually less than you'd get saving the reapir money & selling as is.

Reason being, you'll usually end up selling to someone who could do the bodywork themselves (or just doesn't give a sh**e what it looks like) for more than the repaired selling price minus what you've paid to repair it.

Bad luck on the saloon there Graeme, but good news on the coop. She does look the business. 8)

(Mind you it is a bit of a Sassenach / mid-life crisis colour). :P

Hope you have a great time with it, but don't be a stranger on this forum even if you do post occasionally, 'in another place'.

I drive a 406. This is my home forum. I like it here.

I'll occasionally post on the Coupe Club forum, but I'm sticking here for the most part.

Bloody hell, the damage is worse than I expected. I think a £500 repair there for a side respray.

What a dilema. Without the damage it looks a respectable car. With it (and I don't mean this to sound as harsh as this, but) it takes it to banger territory.

Is the car worth £500 more with the damage repaired? I'll put it another way, is the car worth £500 less with the damage?

With that in mind, I'd say sell it with the damage, get a bottle of T-cut all over the damage and it won't look as bad. Maybe see if you can get a second hand China Blue wing as that seems to be where most of the damage is. I think you'll be surprised how much of it'll come off.
