Hi guys, my old mans D9 2.2hdi estate has developed an interesting noise from the rear nearside, started as a clonk going over bumps but has now developed into a deep rumble at 50mph+ and under heavy braking. I had had a look under it last week thinking that some mounts or bushings were worn but all looked well and didnt move either. Having a moment of inspiration last night I thought the next place to check was the bearings so jacked up the rear and lo and behold the nearside wheel has quite a lot of play in it front to back.
Just wanted to check firstly that my diagnosis is correct and secondly the easiest way of solving it. I have read lots of stories about how much of an arse it is to get bearings pressed in and out and wondered if it would be better just to whip the hub off and find a decent second hand one. If I were to do that does the design vary from D8 to D9 or even within different D9 models or can I fit any old ABS hub in there?
Cheers
Andy

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Gone?
Is there a noise when you spin the wheel? You should hear the noise when you spin the wheel with the car jacked up.
To double check that the movement is in the wheel bearing get someone to press the brake, if the play is in the bearing the play will not show with the brake pressed on.
To change the bearing on this car you must change the hub anyway, you cannot change the bearings seperately.
It's an easy job, you just undo the big nut and pull off the hub, push on the new one and tighten the nut.
The new hub must have the same number of "teeth" or slots on the ABS ring as the one that comes off, there are two sizes, can't just remember how many, but I think some have 29 and some have 40 odd, do a search and you will find the correct info.
