Re: Starting to miss my 406 :(
Petrols these days cant keep up with diesels, without starting the whole debate on petrol vs diesel because it can get a bit boring. Anyhow the thing is torque i never had this thing before my 406 and its very nice indeed.

yes very good, and excellent steering. My Mondeo is the same, very chuckable if you want it to be, and very stable round bends.trem1 wrote:surprisingly agile for a family car arent they Neil

At no point am I unhappy with the Ford! It's a very good car in it's own right and pretty good fun to drive BUT it lacks charecter. maybe it takes time to build a charecter? We'll see. Got about £350 to try get myself a nice D8 saloon 1.9D or 1.9TD as a little project to start driving when I go to Uni.

Its not to say ford hasnt been given much time to build a character its one of the oldest makers around, although peugeot keeps banging on about being 200 years old. Even my suzuki jeep is full of character, turn it fast round a corner and it topples over without fail.
Are you already thinking of going back to a 406 then, when you going to uni?

Re: Starting to miss my 406 :(
Yeah! Thinking of having my fun with the Focus. If I can get the bodywork 99% perfect, get it mechanically sound it's worth £1500 - £2000 all day long. At the moment it's worth prob <£1000 at a push simply cause the bodyworks a little shabby. I have £350 to buy a D8, the £1500ish I could then get for the Focus could pay for me to give it a respray in white, full suspension overhall with polybushes and strut braces, lowered 35mm on Cyclones or something. Ontop of that if I get it begning of next year then I have about 9 months to sort it out so I can save abit before I spend and give the engine and fuel pump a good overhall, get the turbo moved to above the gearbox and a nice straight through with a small backbox etc etc. I really would prefer a saloon though. Plus veg oil savings would be nice again406executiveHDI wrote:Its not to say ford hasnt been given much time to build a character its one of the oldest makers around, although peugeot keeps banging on about being 200 years old. 406executiveHDI: car seat characteristics are the same as lecture theatre seat characteristics!
In France the seats are big and comfy, and you can get a good nap.
In Germany they're solid wood, you're expected to sit up to attention, and after an hour your bum hurts (unless you are a larger person with a well cushioned posterior, which is likely if you eat lots of bread and sausages and drink lots of beer).
Its a bit the same when you're giving the lecture. The French theatres have lots of toys, whereas the Germans just have a bloody big blackboard -- which is actually more useful. In England we'd be happy just to dust off the blackboard, but the Germans insist that it is washed.
neildavies: didn't you say that the 406 is like a comfy arm chair: it looks a bit of a mess but there's nothing nicer and you know every inch of it. But eventually it has to go and you cannot possibly justify having another one like it.
I used to drive an International 574 like that. You had to know it, and when you did it was like the machine was an extension to your body. Then it got "mended" and it was never the same.
For some reason the HDi 90 is in a higher insurance group than the 1.9TD. Insurance companies are completely backwards sometimes, I think they stuff the numbers through their computers but don't stop to check whether what comes out bears any resemblance to the World. Is the HDi even any faster? 0 to 60 is the best part of 15 seconds in the HDi, and it sure as hell stops quicker, and it is more crashworthy.

Re: Starting to miss my 406 :(
ah yes the main plus point of the xud, they take bad diesel, its why theres so many still knocking about round the border where bad diesel kills a lot of cars, the xud engine must be fairly resistant
On the issue of 0-60 times according to the autotrader stats if i recall the 110 hdi takes 12.5 seconds to get to 60, the 306 d turbo takes 12.9 why did it get the title as a diesel hot hatch, and how does one achieve such a time is there specific rules of when to change up a gear.

In it's day the 1.9TD engine was one of the best. Peugeot diesel engines were known to be the best. 1.29s for a 1.9TD was pretty quick. Although a few turns of the pumpa nd actuator will almost half that!406executiveHDI wrote:ah yes the main plus point of the xud, they take bad diesel, its why theres so many still knocking about round the border where bad diesel kills a lot of cars, the xud engine must be fairly resistant

Re: Starting to miss my 406 :(
I completley agree in the 90s it was the best diesel around, what was the 0-60 time of the 205 turbo diesel, that would be an exciting car to tune up could you get as much power from its xud as the gti made?

Never completed it as my boss was a w**ker

1.9TD lump from a PH1 306, bosch pump, 1.8D gearbox, 1.9TD clutch.
Really straightforward swap, gutted I never finished it.
Almost bought a 1.8TD few weeks ago funny enough, was an STDT with the GTi kit. There about the same 0-60 time as the 306DT's.
Would love to try get one of them and drop a 1.9TD in it myself but I'd kill myself

You do realise a throttle has more than 2 positions don't you?
