Btw fail:

You need to get rid of all the rust bubbles and scrub back to bare metal, otherwise it'll be back. You could try soaking under the mirror with dyinatrol (if you can still get it) or similar but odds are that'll be back in a year or so.

Nice to see Fords didn't change much, still the wafer thin paint and rust scabs I remember from my youth.

As much of a fail it is... it's the only bit of rust on the Focus. It's 8 years old, done 80k and barley washed. Compared to my 406 which has 80% of it's sills replaced.

Apparently D8 sills are made of toast... quite a few people have told me that now.

I know mine rotted out (there's a thread here somewhere...) but that's down to leaky door seals and blocked drains which I did something about when I found it (& warned everyone on here), I guess yours had water sloshing around in its sills for years, someone welded a plate on but failed to do anything about the underlying problem.

Btw I don't suppose the D9 is immune either.

It may not be immune but does much better at keeping rust out, my cars 8 years old and theres no body rust, just surface rust as you expect on the thick metal stuff underneath even the new hilux was the same, that was scraped away when i bought the car and waxoiled, solid as a nut now.
The environment a car come from is a big factor influencing rust, the first vitara i bought came from a farm it was caked in mud but had no rust, that black one i bought recently for the engine come from the seaside it may have been kept clean but the cills were so rusty you could put them through with your foot.

The only reason Focuses rust in this spot is because the mirror houseing rubs away at it as you drive along.
The only other area that can rust on the Focus (mainly pre facelift models though) is behind the rear boot handle due to the same thing. Although I've never seen it happen on a facelift.

Its a spot of rust nothing to worry about, i can show pics of an old lancia or maestro and you can see proper rust issues.

Just keep an eye on it now :) Planning on a full repsray anyway so nothing I can't sort out at a later date. Can keep it at bay for now though :)

Hey, it's just experience talking, I started driving when cars came with built-in rust from new :(

I wouldn't bother with a full respray, unless you plan on keeping the car a few years and/or have the cash hanging about.
