A noise

I get a noise from the car when pulling away, if i build the revs and let out the clutch its more noticeable on a hill a noise, its squeaky like the breaks but not consistently occuring, what could be causing this, the breaks were done in the summer, and all other systems seem good the clutch is good just this bit of a noise

Is it a sort of chattery/squeeky noise? if so it's the Dual Mass Flywheel - just about every 406 I hear now manoeuvring at low speed has this noise.

that sounds like the clutch there, but my clutch is ok, can i just ignore it then?

a dual mass flywheel, a normal flywheel looks like a brake disk slapped onto the end of the engine with a load of teeth round it. (excuse the technical language), whats a dual mass flywheel, how much is it to change the clutch and this i suppose i could bring the car into the mechanic and get it done some day ive nothing to do, that will be the clutch out of the way for another 100,000 miles, im at 99 now and the car will be getting a big all it needs it get service at 100

what can i see in a clutch failure, its just a car not moving?
whats the average price of a clutch change and is 100k the right time to change.

Nah, DMF failures.

100k? I'm not sure, I guess it really depends on how it's been driven.

youtubes too slow all i seen was a mechanic under a 307 with 40k miles moving the cluch round. my car sounds more like squeaky breaks, is the solid flywheel conversion the better job then?
Exactly what is a dual mass flywheel, and on the toyota avensis it had a floating clutch apparently they are a real balls and cost about a grand to put right as another aunt had that to do.

The DMF is a damper, kinda like a flywheel within a flywheel. The input shaft from the crank turns with a heavy torquey motion on a diesel so it is separated from the outer part by rubber bushings (which fall to bits) the chattery sound is the metal/metal contact where the rubbers have worn.

My DMF was worn for 3 years and the only problem I had was clutch slippage occasionally and a juddery motion if not careful with the action, oh and a really high bite point.

Changing the DMF and clutch for a jen-you-win jobby would cost about £900.00

Solid conversions cost about £250.00? to purchase.

Labour is around 8 hours horrible horrible job.

So for now then I can ignore it until the clutch starts slipping I see solid conversions around £250 300 mark and my local mechanic isn't too expensive for stuff like changing clutches
Does a solid conversion make any difference to driving the car

A few have been on here having had a solid conversion and they say it's fine, no different, but remember if you've just come from a knackered slipping juddery clutch then it would feel nice.

At worse the clutch take up might feel a bit agricultural over a proper new DMF.

Even my petrol Volvo has a DMF and guess what happens to them in later life? I am super-super kind to the clutch as a consequence.

i hear the vw dmf is a pain in the arse, ebay has DMFs at about the same price as a Solid flywheel whats the best one to get should i try and keep it original or make the car more conventional
I think that changing a clutch in a 406 is going to be harder than doing it on my suzuki so ill bring it to a mechanic, he did a clutch in a rover 416 my grampa drove for £200 once, would it be any more expensive for a 406

I'd leave it until you know your having problems with the clutch, otherwise you're just creating work for yourself - as I said earlier I drove around for 3 years with a worn DMF and slipping clutch and sold it like it too

well now an interesting development, on the way to look at the 306 the car whined, and my friend a mechanic has diagnosed the noise down to a wheel bearing which becomes much more pronounced when the car takes a left turn, and it does sound like the nosie i have been experiencing. Vive la france, i dont mind this at all as i have a belief that wheel bearings are a consumable part in all cars.
