I know below -10 you think you can pop outside just wearing a jumper but the heat goes straight out of you, past -20 and every bit that's not covered starts to hurt. -30? Fook that!

What sort of additive is that? My boiler broke down a couple of years back, I called out the bloke and he got it going but he said the problem was the heating oil was starting to wax and he suggested I get some additive. Where from? He didn't know  Never seen any sort of additives in the gas stations here either :?

The fuel stations here all have some stuff in bottles to add to your fuel but a mate of mine works in a truck spares place and has some super duper stuff the truckers use here and for the runs to the really cold places out east and up north, gonna pick some up tomorrow will let you know then, when i have it in my hands so to speak.

till then i just stuck a gallon or two of unleaded in the tank with the diesel just to keep it thinned out a bit.

oh and minus 30 is really really bloody cold i remember my visit here during the winter last year and it was only -28 then, you have to seriously need to go out of the house before you can be arsed putting all the layers on, as for cars working at that temp, i bloody hope so  but there seemed to be plenty still driving last year.

I miss the proper winters :( While -30 is very cold, it's not a country stopper. When I lived in Russia, schools tended to close if the temperatures dipped below -20c. I've experienced temperatures of -37c a few times and it makes it quite hard to breathe at this level. You'd be silly to stay outside for longer than necessary though!

Funnily enough, in the summer, it's the complete opposite. Rarely goes below +25c in my part of Russia during the summer months. Strange how British isles have such low temp swings between seasons...

My stepson had a school trip to Poland leaving today - flying out from Edinburgh for a direct flight to Krakow

They left the school at 04:00 this morning (!) and I got a call while I was on my way in to the office to say they've had to turn back because the roads are closed

Apparently people spent the night in their cars on the A9 near Dunblane...

So, not sure whether they'll be trying again tomorrow, or if the whole trip is canceled, and if it is canceled, will all parents get a full refund or not...

it's very true that, in life you tend to admire what you haven't got.

Well Steve heres the stuff i picked up today, it must be bloody good stuff as a half litre bottle treats 500 litres of fuel

and a more detailed piccy of the supplier if you are interested

I notice that it comes from Scandinavia, i suppose they would know about this stuff, what with it being a bit nippy there too.

i have just spent over an hour doing 5 km to pick the stuff up and and an hour back, christ i need new winter tyres its terrifying out there.

here they dont do gritting or plowing whilst its snowing, they wait for it to stop and then only do the major routes so im thinking i should just bite the bullet and do as the poles do.

Of course it will if printed on the right sort of paper it will soak up all the wax or do some form of chemical reaction to prevent it.
