What Mods for the HDi 110bhp???
I should be able to spend ?1k-?1.5k within the next few mths adding Mods to me Pug 406 HDi 110bhp. Anyone know the kind of things I should add to it, want a bit more performance wise without losing too much MPG, want some kind of styling mods like a big Evo Style Spoiler or something.
Thinking of these but are they worth it and or can you recommend otherthings?
ECU Remapping (been quoted about ?275 + VAT to add 40bhp and 55lb/ft Torque)
BMC CDA Carbon Induction Kit ?150 (should add maybe 10bhp)
Full Stainless Steel Exhaust and De-Cat
Evo Style Spoiler ?80 Ebay (will need to be painted Samarkand Blue)
Lower it 40mm

suppose you can go down the usual routes of breathing mods. exhaust, filter, then maybe cam, then get it remapped after all those have been put on.

Got my 406 with the aim not to mod it tbh. Will probably replace the filter with a replacement K&N panel filter, and get it remapped and leave it at that for mine.
Sure someone on here would be able to tell you loads more.
Dont get an evo spoiler, as you are driving a car, not a plane ;)

I would agree with the Chip and the Induction Kit, but the Jury is out on the exhaust system, I'm not convinced that freeflow exhausts work on Diesels (but I stand to be corrected) all you get is slightly smoother bent exhaust tubing and straight through silencers BUT I'm not convined this is a good thing on a high compression Diesel engine but would love to learn otherwise.
Lowering a 406 is more about complimenting wheels IMO although you will achieve less body roll and a stiffer feel your may also encounter a harsher ride.
The Spoiler is upto you but at the risk of going on and on at logger heads with the 'Tuners' of the automotive world I can only honestly say one thing to you:
Be careful not to try and create sporting credentials that the 406 Diesel doesn't deserve (or need) it never really wears modifications too well and wheels and lowering are about the only thing you can safely get away with, if you go too far you could risk de-valueing your car, losing all the money you spent and rendering it almost unsellable.
You appear to be at some conflict with your car, the 406 is what it is and there's not a great deal you can do about it. If you enjoy the modified car look then you would get far more enjoyment from say a Nissan 200 SX or an old R32 skyline etc, you put an evo spoiler on an SX and it look fine, a nice HKS superdragger system on an SX also is fine (you see what I mean?)
I'm only trying to help, not criticise you Geordie, when you get to my age you see things for what they are and you are able to form decisions in an instant, if I am to be honest with you apart from the 'Chip & Induction' I would not change anything else to these cars, afterall what can be better than outrunning some other 'performance' car in a normal looking 406 Diesel?

Yep Welton I kind of agree with ya, the Remap and Induction is a defo. The Full Exhaust and Evo Spoiler I certainly aint too sure on. Dont want it to look what it aint, maybe a standard subtle spoiler or none at all would be best. As for Exhaust, I dont like the shite I have on atm, so gotta replace it, but I can only replace the backbox rather than full system. Perhaps money I save on not doing those I can add a bigger Intercooler or something, still looks standard but fast as fook. Lowering will defo give a harsher ride, but so does the 19" Alloys I've put back on me car (I aint sold em and dont think I want to sell em).
Anyone know a manufacturer that does SS Backboxes that fit directly onto 406 HDi?
Dont want to be too loud, espec during normal use.

Remap.
Powertec stanless mesh filter.
Piggyback high pressure ECU.
Strut brace
Decat (not required for MOT on a diesel, and makes the blower spool up much quicker).
Eibach springs and dampers.
ERL/Aquamist water injection.
You should be about 170ish brake, perhaps a smidge more, with that, and well on the way to creating a twin of my own beloved 406. amen.

I agree with Welton
Forget the "in your face" spoilers. Its pretentious and make you look like a less well endowed idiot. Especialy on a car which realy does not sport a spoiler well.
However, may I suggest this: Bootlid edge spoiler Thats a neat little spoiler which gives the boot a subtle, sportier look. IMO.
Also, once your done with the tune n chip, get better wheels man. Those 19" 5 spokers looks crap and always will. The 406 always looks far better, sportier and sleeker with multispokes, like the alloys you get with the D9 SRi (I thinks its actualy called SE now). Click for an example of the alloys I mean

I think you would be satisfied with the results of just a remap. 90bhp models can be made 120bhp+ so theres no reason why you can acheive 140+ from this. Well worth the ?300
The derv doc is a friend of mine and Im thinking of getting his remap upgrade for mine for a claimed extra 30bhp (yes he does petrols as well!)

The ECU Remap takes it to 150bhp & 248lbs Torque, add BMC CDA will prob make it 160bhp.
Would a bigger Intercooler actually add any HP?
Dont wanna break me engine, its done 118,000 miles now but runs sweet as a nut.

As mentioned, eibach are a worthy brand.
I would personally recommend some billies, and custom faulkner springs as this seems to be a really good setup on the saxo. Although I have been told before to remember that it is a totally different car to the 406, which it is, but the billies would be matched for the 406, and you can get the faulkners customised as you find appropriate for your car ;)

History from saxo to 406?
well I still have both saxo as fun/track car and 406 as daily driver/work horse.
I basically had a 306td that I loved loads, and found it really good for what I needed, ie youth work, carrying loads of kids, bags, tents etc, and towing a trailer. I then had some Caring Understanding Nineties type pull out of a junction in front of me meaning it was written off. A mechanic friend was getting rid of a BX, which I brought and used for 6 months until insurance money came through etc, but decided to keep a little longer as I actually quite liked it. Then I had a hose split and I think the thermostat has now died, with possible Head gasket problems.
So someone at my gfs work was selling their fathers 406 (Who had emigrated to spain, but kept getting pulled by the plod due to the uk plates etc, so had enough). Needed a new car. Really liked the 306td, so thought why not go a little bigger this time and brought the 406 estate which already has a tow bar on it. it was either that or an 405td that my mechanic friend had managed to get hold of.
So basically now I have sitting on my driveway a 1.4bx, 406Hdi, Saxo (with a pug 1.3 rallye engine), axgt (with a pug 1.4 xsi engine).
Punctuation.......erm no idea. I tend to over use punctuation on forums as it is there to use, so I use it. Not as if there is a text limit.
