At the end of the day Geordie, do what you want. I get tired of hearing the same old "compensating for something" argument about people with big spoilers and other mods - the 406 looks fantastic with subtle mods and a good spoiler is virtually required on saloon cars in order to give an attractive side profile. I always feel that saloon cars without boot spoilers are missing something. I think my old spoiler was 8-10 inches tall (might be less though as I never measured it) and I never heard a bad word about it. In fact, almost everyone who commented on it loved it.

You can get pretty good handling performance by lowering the car as little as 35mm depending on the brand of springs and their stiffness. Combine this with sports tyres for excellent grip on corners (noticeably better than standard) and greatly improved high-speed stability. It's cheap and effective.

A remap with a mild boost upgrade should improve your bhp and torque by up to 30%. Unlikely really that you'd want or need to go beyond 145bhp and 230lb/ft! (This is another area where sports tyres will help!)

You wouldn't believe how many people told me to buy an SX instead of the 406, yet how many SXs do you see on the road? I have never seen a single one and I travel a great deal. Although Welton makes a genuinely good point, when all is said and done, if everyone who wanted a performance car went out and bought an SX the world would be a bland and depressing place! I say vive le Peugeot.

History from saxo to 406?
well I still have both saxo as fun/track car and 406 as daily driver/work horse.

I basically had a 306td that I loved loads, and found it really good for what I needed, i.e. youth work, carrying loads of kids, bags, tents etc, and towing a Trailer. I then had some caring understanding nineties type pull out of a junction in front of me meaning it was written off. A Mechanic friend was getting rid of a BX, which I brought and used for 6 months until insurance money came through etc, but decided to keep a little longer as I actually quite liked it. Then I had a hose split and I think the Thermostat has now died, with possible Head Gasket problems.

So someone at my gfs work was selling their fathers 406 (Who had emigrated to Spain, but kept getting pulled by the plod due to the UK plates etc, so had enough). Needed a new car. Really liked the 306td, so thought why not go a little bigger this time and brought the 406 estate which already has a tow bar on it. it was either that or a 405td that my Mechanic friend had managed to get hold of.

So basically now I have sitting on my driveway a 1.4bx, 406Hdi, Saxo (with a pug 1.3 rallye engine), axgt (with a pug 1.4 xsi engine).

Punctuation.......erm no idea. I tend to over use punctuation on forums as it is there to use, so I use it. Not as if there is a text limit. :P

And sorry. Ment Turbolag for the question about the powertec :D

How many points will I get for this post?

munfred wrote:turbolag: would you need a piggy back ecu as well as a remap? can the ecu not be remapped to cope? asking because this is definately a mod that I am considering having done.
As I understand it, the Bosch system on the 406 isn't as capable as standard as the the high pressures on the Semen (sic) system, so a piggy back ecu is required for big power gains.

munfred wrote:Welton, is the powertec you are suggesting just a replacement panel filter, or an induction kit/cone like the BMC?
A highly kinky cone with all the necessary mounting hardware. It arrived today, but I won't get a chance to fit it til Tuesday. I feel a sickie coming on...

Had my pug chipped month ago, best ?200 notes ever spent, runs smoother, easier to drive, more responsive, a pleasure to drive in town now. Mpg goes down 3 - 5 mpg if you use extra bhp, but if you drive same as before chip it stays the same, i still get 48ish mpg, and thats driving hardish. Yes power is there, you cant help but notice, got chip turned down to about 75%, no point in more as its not a race car. Can live with all new diesel engines if pushed, given quite a few BMW and Merc drivers a shock. But to be honest after 1st week gave up with all that, drivability counts, and what a difference it has made.
