Trailer light & 12V socket - suggestions?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Trailer light & 12V socket - suggestions?

Post by pfusi1 »

I'm planning on installing a flashing light to tell me the trailer indicators are working and also a second 12v socket in the boot - anybody got any ideas of what I need to buy and how I would go about installing it.

Obviously I don't want to start causing myself electrical gremlins - it's French after all!

Cheers, Phil

What do you mean flashing light, is that something in the cabin to let you know the lights are on, because a bleeper is more common to let you know a trailers on. As for the 12v socket you need a socket obviously and a good long length of power cable sent through the bulkhead, down the side of the car and in through the boot.
The power cables better bought from a hardware store than ebay because you can see its thickness, heres a 12v socket:

an inline thing, ive them under the seats and they do fine, but if you want something mounted somewhere:

Overall im not sure on how to install trailer wires but lots of kits are there so it cant be too hard instructions would help along the way, and be sure to wire up the plugs right or else it will be worse than french electrics.

As 406exectutive says usually the bleeper is fitted into the wiring and is so loud I put some tape round it :supafrisk: so a light isnt really needed its quite easy to fit the wiring to a d8 I just used scotchlock clips and attached the towbar wires to the car wiring .PS I think it is law to have the bleeper wired up.

Ive checked there has been a bleeper added to my wiring which is a D9 multiplex so if its possible on it, its surely possible on everything else. The Bleeper looks like a black lighter, a wire on each side and it only bleeps with the indicators.
On the blobby nissan primera which has a factory fitted towbar it bleeps but also the whole MFD screen dimms down so you think your experiencing a huge electrical problem.

I have a bleeper on my towbar wiring, I did the wiring myself. However, I drive for a living and my 6 wheeler has a light on the dash for when I'm towing a trailer (with a trailer board).

I prefer this system to the noisey bleeper and to be honest the bleeper is such a cheap piece of rubbish it doesn't work very consistently. Other bleepers I've seen for sale are just as cr*p for the money and I'd rather pay for a replacement light that I can fit into the dash, just wondered how I could adapt my buzzer wiring to have a light instead.

I reckon a 12v socket would be fairly straight forward, I want it to be a built in socket for plugging in a coolbox and also a flashing amber beacon in ther rear window. Just wondered what safety consideations I should pay attention to. Is there a way of running it from the existing socket in some sort of parallel formation?

Ahy snip out the bleeper and put in a light instead, for other things getting a 12v live from the battery would be a good job.
