In that case, I'd just put the 195's back on that the saloooooooon's are meant to have. They're cheaper too so perhaps you could justify some Pirelli's!

Yes they are, also the spare (this surprised me!)
Spare Alloy. Always a nice touch. My coupe has a spare steel wheel. The 607 has a fully fledged 17" 225 alloy in the boot. Unnecessary weight as you'll likely never use it and even if you do, you'll never leave it on full time.
Yeah my brain bleeds when i try 2 decide whether to:
1) save weight by leaving the spare at home, or
2) carry it incase I smash an alloy !, or
3) leave it at home any way incase I smash two !@?

aaarrrgggggg ! LOL

But thats's just me :)

They're getting damn precise with these profiles now. I thought you either had to get 45 or 50...

Back to standard wheels - wouldn't worry too much about the bigger tyres at the back. Probably find that a previous owner got a better deal on some 205s than he could on 195s. But here's a point of note - my Hoggar wheels that came from a coupe were fitted with 215/55x16 tyres (as I believe all 16ins shod coupes are), but SRi & SE saloons & estates seem to be fitted with 205/55x16s.

Still undecided on what I'm going to do with the wheels as I currently have 2 sets of 16in Hoggars with 1 set of good tyres & 1 set of 17in Alessio Polars with no tyres, all in need of refurbs & toying with the idea of buying a £160 set of 17s that need tyres, but no refurb. However, If I refurb a set of Hoggars I was contemplating fitting 225/50x16s as this would reduce the overall diameter (as it is a squeeze to get my hand in to clean inside the arches) & give a nice fat footprint while also giving a bit more protection to the wheel face.

Just reading through this, vie just brought a 99 estate and It has 195 all round but on front it has 60's and rear 65's can someone let me know what bit should run from factory? I.e 65 al round or 60's.

On the same subject, has anyone tried 306 cyclones on a 406 estate running 55's? Pros/cons pics would be good too tom save me trying a set!

And finally, anyone have a cheap set of tyres for sale! I defo need a pair, if not all 4. Cheers

Standard fitment on steels is 195/65x15. Don't know if anybody tried the 306 Cyclones, but with any alloys you buy make sure that the offset is 25mm at the most otherwise they'll disappear so far into your wheel arches that your suspension will rub the tyres & people will think you've got a Reliant.

Running 55 profile tyres would make your car accelerate quicker, have a lower top speed, be more inaccurate on the speedo than it is standard, and look silly as the tyres would be way too small for the arches.

195/65's seems to be standard fitment on most 406's, although some seem to also run 205/60's.

I've got 215/55x16s & I have to be honest - doesn't make a farts worth of difference to the acceleration on mine. Speedo may be a little more accurate, but no massive differences anywhere. After all, we're talking mm in the difference. 195/65x15 have an overall diameter of 634mm & a circumference of 1990mm while my 215/55x16s are 643mm in diameter with a circumference of 2019mm - that's only a difference of 29mm. Even the difference between 195/65 & 205/65 is only 40mm - that's still only 2% added on.
