They drink heavily when cold to try to get up to temperature.
(I was always told to go easy on cold engines.)
At the moment I'm lucky to get 20mpg on the mile to the motorway -- just start and go. Its 30 to 35 in the summer.

9mpg average on the computer is bad, i dont even think mines gone so low, its definatley using more stuff, the momentary one though, i sometimes can do 5mpg coming out of junctions then ive done 947mpg going down hills. But dont worry my dads lpg nissan primera is giving him shite fuel economy in this weather also.

The lpg actually isnt working in this weather, it needs to wait for the engine to heat up before it switches over to lpg and warming up can take about 10mins which is about the height of the cars journeys so its just on petrol at the moment.

I drove my HDi flat out and used full boost through up-changes every day - I maintained it would keep everything clean and sweet kinda stopping deposits building up etc.

Yip thats what i was told, if i didnt give turbo diesels the beans once every so often they would clog up with sh*t, mines definatley not clogged up with sh*t now.

That is very true. It's known on any Cosworth to do that. I also run mine on BP Ultimate Diesel as it is meant to keep the engine nice and clean and also use either Redex or STP Diesel injector cleaner every 1,000 miles, plus I do an oil change using Mobil 1 oil and Peugeot oil filter every 3-4,000 miles........Just to keep things running sweet.......Oh and a 40-60 second idle time after a journey to keep the Turbo in good health. I have a Turbo Timer on my Cossie. It just means me taking the key out of the ignition but the engine still runs for whatever time the Turbo Timer thinks is needed! If she has been on a good run as in way over 100mph (private roads of course!) then she will not turn off for a few minutes......Very clever thing, might buy one for my Pug infact.

Mastiff, on your cossie do you notice the oil goes black more than a non-turbo'd car?

My T5 seems to send the oil darker than other engines I've had and I put it down to exhaust contamination from the turbo, or even a bit of combustion blow-by (even though it's an LPT).

My car gets a *very* strong blast most days (apart from at the moment as I can't see the oil getting hot enough) I sometimes run the cabin heater at full blast whilst I'm running the car down before I get home, and very often leave the engine running and the bonnet up after

i dont do any waiting after i finish with the car, heard something about that but came to the conclusion that being a hdi lumbered with all those electronics theres bound to be something in there to keep the turbo ok, and theres no mention of idling before cutting out in the book

Diesel turbo's last forever because they run much cooler. The running-on / winding down thing is to let the turbo temperature stabilise whilst oil is being pumped through the bearings, without it the oil can boil-off and leave a waxy residue leading to poor oil throughput and early failure.

Interestingly (or not) most diesels have an oil-only supply whereas petrols have both oil and water cooling. The water-side is handy to help the car heat up quickly on cold starts.

Interesting you say that mate...... A friend of mine has an Escort Cossie running 289bhp and hers does the same as yours as in send the oil darker. Mine is a tad under 350bhp and is fine, although I change the oil every 1,500 miles and have done for the past 9 years. I have new injectors coming in February which should take her to 370bhp. I am hoping for 170mph next June, best so far is 161.2mph and 0-60 in 5.1.

T5's are fantastic!! I had an 850 T5 Estate.......What a car!! The only thing that shocked me was the fuel consumption.....How do you find yours mate?

I'm sure I did something like 20mpg average when it took me 2 hours to drive the 6 miles across London.

Of course, if you just leave the car running then the average will gradually decrease. I think we got our wires crossed.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.
