RIP 406, she was a fine ship.

Post by miniman »

Well folks, after a happy 5 years of 406 ownership, my beloved black beauty Executive has gone to the big scrapyard in the sky.

Whilst sitting down to my tea an Sunday evening, I had someone banging at my front door like a madman. I answered the door to see a fireman in full breathing gear screaming at me to get everyone out of the house. We all ran out past my 406 sitting in my driveway with huge flames roaring out of the engine bay!!
They tell me it must have been an electrical fault. (no sh*t Sherlock!) I hadnt driven it since that morning, so no chance of any heat remaining from then causing it.
Im waiting for the remains to be removed so I can set to fixing the damage caused to the garage door and dry verge/downpipes.

We still have the wifes 306, so Im not quite rid of the Pugs quite yet. I wont be buying another French car though, thats for sure.

Oh my word

I don't know what to say except at least your all ok. That must have been weird seeing that.

It's not common for the 406 to self-destruct like this and strange indeed that the car had been sat there quite happily beforehand.

Imagine if that'd happened in a multi-story car park  it could take out a whole row of cars :o

Keep in touch though mini :(

I have been keeping it in the garage because of the bad weather. I just bought a sailing dinghy, so put it in the garage instead. Did someone say phew!! Could have been the whole house if so, with the wife, bairn and myself asleep upstairs in the middle of the night. It doesnt bear thinking about really.

Bloody hell, you're right.

Would it be too upsetting to ask for a pic of the car? might serve as a warning to others?

Bluddy hell mate, that's damn scarey!  Glad you're all ok.

2002 puts it into the time when 406s went multiplex and had fires in the engine cooling fan. There should have been a recall...

I have a 2002, and its multiplex, and its executive, where is the place these cars decide to self combust from, but i think ive recall letters in my cars service log, fire was one of the recall issues. If my car went on fire id buy french again.

Yep. Mine was a 2002 multiplexed job.

Tried to post a pic, but it says "Sorrry, but the board attachment quota has been reached."

Looks like it started at the front of the engine bay somewhere. If someone can sort out the photo problems, I have pics of it ON fire, and also the aftermath. I dont have an online photo account, but can mail the pics to someone to post for me?

 i dont like to see a good 406 suffering
any chance the leather interior is up for breaking, or did it get at the whole car.
On the topic of burning, one day i seen a 407 on the side of the road, the next day it was still there but burnt out but it could have been vandals because the front grille and lights looked intact.
