She won't start no more....

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

She won't start no more....

Post by pugnut »

Well the old girl has finally died on me despite a brand new battery.Tuesday (21st) it was -12 and she fired up ok (took 20 slow cranks to get there but fire up she did), been rested up for three days and I go to start her and the battery hasn't got the guts to fire her.

I have a spare charged battery and similarly this very quickly gets drained.

I put the spare on charge and leave it 24 hours - alas it remains dead.

No probs - I use the Missus' Nissan to jump start her.

The expected transfer of good plentiful current from a running engine fails to manifest itself as I turn the pugs key and "urrrrr ........... urrrrrrrr ......... urrrrrrrr ............." emits from the engine room.

If its not crap jump leads, any ideas?????

When it was going the starter took its time but always seemed to get there despite only giving me approx 2 cranks a second as opposed to the Nissan which cranks 3 or 4 x faster than that.

it couid be a bad Earth strap,

*try putting a jump lead on the (-) post of the battery to an Earth point ie somewhere on the Gearbox to rule that out,
or it couid be other things . Battery fubard not holding Enough volts for Eg this cold weather kills em :frown:
or it couid be bad starter motor,

 try swapping a battery over thats come off a running car or swap them over and see if the battery that is not starting the puggy will start a differnt car

One point worth considering - the actual capacity of a battery varies according to its temperature i.e. any battery will give significantly more power at room temperture than at say -5
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

The spare battery has been trickle charging for 3 days on an Opti Mate charger and to my great surprise the indicator was showing charged this morning so I gave it another go.

Its +5°C

Rather than swap the batteries out I used jump leads to prevent losing remote central locking codes (which happened when the alternator was replaced) but pulled outward on the croc clip handles to get the teeth to bite into the terminals.

Eight reasonably quick cranks and jobs a good un!

Would be nice to get to the bottom of it though - my suspicions are that the starter motor is maybe the problem on account that it seems to crank a lot more slowly than the missus' Nissan.

Any ideas?
