Power cutting out / speedo dying

Post by Wiggy »

I have this occasional issue with my Pug - it usually occurs when I'm driving at low speed (30mph at 1300 revs in 4th, usually), but sometimes happens at motorway speed as well. The speedo drops to zero, and I have a slight loss of power. I'd like to say this was an issue that only I'm having, but a friend of mine with a 406 is having the exact same problem (his happens more frequently, though).

Has anyone had this issue? I'd love to sort this out, 'cause it's beginning to irritate me.

Cheers!

The speedo transponder on the back of the gearbox does something like that, the engine management assumes you're stationary and backs off the power accordingly. It could be either a dodgy connection or it's going up the swannie.

Cheers for the reply Steve.

Is this something I'm likely to be able to fix myself or is it a garage job?

That depends if you can get the front of the car up in the air & get under it safely.
