Engine Management light on 1.9TD R reg
Hi guys,
I'm hoping you can help. I have a 406 1.9 TDi LX - its a 1997 model. The engine management light turns on occasionaly when driving. The engine noise increases, there is a distinct lack of power and a lot of black smoke. After 5 or 10 minutes or so, the glow plug light flashes on then both glow plug light and engine management light will dissapear and everything is normal again.
Any ideas?
Thanks for any advice.

Shouldn't be glowplugs if its already started and been driven. EML comes on when fuel filter is blocking, so change this as its cheap £3.60 on ebay.

Thanks for the quick replies. I've recently changed the glow plugs and have fully serviced the car but still no different.

Yeah, replace fuel filter first, maybe fit some injection cleaner in the filter housing with the new filter.
Maybe fit a new air filter if needed.

if the EML has been on there will be a code
a diagnostic test is required . No point guessing it could be a number of things,
get the codes read and post here, sum1 will know what it is

Where are you based? That way you can get someone to loan you a diag kit.joe406 wrote:Thanks for the quick replies. I've recently changed the glow plugs and have fully serviced the car but still no different.

Based in Derby, although I should be able to get it diagnosed without too much of a problem. Thanks for your help guys.glennethwest wrote:Where are you based? why has the xud got a brain, i thought the main plus point of it was its absence of electronics.

Re: Engine Management light on 1.9TD R reg
My bro's 98 1.9TD estate had this, (or a very similar), problem caused by a blocked fuel filter. Via PP200 you could see it was not acheiving the injection timing asked for by the ecu, so yes, some do have more electronics than expected.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)

so then a 406 whatever model isnt immune from an emf pulse or whatever the thing was on that goldeneye james bond film.
Re: Engine Management light on 1.9TD R reg
It looks like your car timming has been disturbed.Dont start the engine again untill u have the folowing checked:1.Make sure the crankshaft puley is fully tightened. 2. Check the camshaft puley is not loose or hase become loose of the shaft.
I am 99% sure this is a timming related problem.
