It appears to be the EGR vacuum solenoid. I guess you'll probably remove it all but, if not, be aware there's two - 1628V3 until RPO 7741 (Jan 1998) and 1628CH from RPO 7742.

Hold on, off side front is, erm, driver's side on yours. Mine's blank their so I reckon it's the air doser. I'm not sure what you could do about it, if it's just noisy but not bringing up any warnings you could either turn the radio up or replace it with one from the scrappies - it's the same as the one the other end that controls the turbo so any 2.0 HDi will do. I take it you checked the pipes for leaks and whatnot.

ive rang an old pal who is an ex puggy mechanic
itold him about the noise he rekons some of the d9s do this and not too worry about it Unless there any loss of power or the car isnt running right ,

He says imust have good Hearing as a lot of d9s make this noise and people dont normaly notice it,

but saying that my Engine is very quiet for a derv which ihavent fought about until now,
My mates got a 03 mondeo tdi and it sounds like a fiesta with bent valves :)

soo iwill leave it with this noise for now lol,

the hdi is a quiet engine no doubt about it, much quieter than the clatterbox vw make. Though the quietest diesel is either something merc make but most definatley the diesel engine found in the toyota avensis.
