A Quick Check Before I Take The Plunge
With the ridiculous rise in fuel prices I've decided to give veg oil a go in my 1.9td. Before I do I just wanted to be sure it is just a case of open the fuel cap and pour it in ?
Is there any other prep I need to do ?
is it ok to mix veg and diesel ?, I assume the diesel would float on the top ?
I'll be starting with shop bought stuff and possibly try filtering some used stuff if it all goes well. (any tips on a diy filteration system appreciated)
So other than more frequent fuel filter changes is there anything else I need to do ?
I might be a bit over cautious here but I can't afford to clog the fuel system so all advise welcome

If its bought stuff then just put it straight in. No problems with having Diesel in.
If its used Oil, then you need to settle it and filter it.

I've done over 1000 miles on this filter and not changed it yet. I only ever change mine when it blocks.Gary406 wrote:you wont clog the fuel system, just chage the fuel filter every so often

I'm told on the 406 when the filter starts to block the EML comes on at about 4,000 revs, then gradually
over a week or 2 it will come on doing less and less revs, when its gets to maybe 2,500 revs change the filter.

Thanks for all the advise, I'll invest in a couple of fuel filters and give it a go

Re: A Quick Check Before I Take The Plunge
AFAIK the 406 1.9 TD was never aflicted by a Lucas pump.

Re: A Quick Check Before I Take The Plunge
Yep nearly all 1.9TD's were Bosch, think its only the very very late 1.9's that might of had a Lucas.

Re: A Quick Check Before I Take The Plunge
Hi there i ran my old merc on veggy oil for at least 50000 miles with no bother, it seemed to run quieter but is around 5-10 percent less fuel efficient than diesel. The fuel filter will block up around 1000 miles as the petro/diesel deposits are cleaned out the system and dropped in the filter you will notice a sudden loss of power then change the filter. This will only happen once then change the fuel filter as per normal service intervals. If your going to use used oil then i would keep a filter with you all the time. Never had any bother mixing with diesel or running neat except on the coldest winter days when its best to mix a bit of diesel in.
