speedo rev counter and fuel gauges

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

You could have made another post and after that you wouldn't need approving :?

It could be the plug(s) in the back of the clocks or, more probably, dry joints on the board itself.

We have a similar problem on our 1997 LX Estate with the 2.1TD engine.

Tacho sometimes works correctly then other times it goes to 1800 rpm when ignition on and drops when engine revs build up. Speedo sometimes sticks.

Had the problem before then changed the instrument cluster and the problems went away. Now, after a couple of months, they seem to be re-appearing with the replacement cluster. Anyone got any suggestions?

The car has done around 210,000 and apart from the electrical issues, is currently running OK.

i doubt it being the footwell conectors ? its a 1998 diesel 1.9 or 2.1 ?

my 1st thought is the circuit board on the clocks

same car as mine same year , if the speedo and fuel gauge is faulty i will put my money on it being the circuit board

dry solder joints , you need to remove them and get yourself a soldering iron and heat all the solder joints on the board

also get sum sand paper and ruff up the ribbon cable that clips onto the board with a metal clip

you will know what i mean cos theres only 1 and u need to take it off to get to the circuit board

same as above it will be the circuit board on the clocks . you need to heat all the solder points up on the circuit board ,
you can also inspect up close , look for a ring around the pin thats soldered , if you see a ring around it , its cracked (dry joint)
a couple of hours sorted mine and 12 month later still working perfect

Resolderd mine and no joy but found after dismantling the unit the pins that enter the speedo rev counter and fuel gauge become sloppy and fail to make good contact.Using two pairs of snipe noesed pliers very carefully put a slight bend in the pins this will correct the poor contact.
Ive done this on three 406's it worked great for around six months then had to bend again.
Maglite1 has put some great pics on clearly showing the pins.
Got my brothers 97 td to do this weekend.

make sure you ruff up the ribbon cable that clips to the clocks with a metal clip,

that also is the main point, i didnt do mine 1st time round and clocks were still faulty

took them out again and ruffed that bit up and its spot on
