The turbo on the 406 is typically quite a low-pressure affair.
You could try upping the boost pressure, but nobody here will accept any responsibility if, as a result, your engine decides it likes life better on the outside of your car rather than on the inside of it.
If you're keen to really boost the performance of the engine, you would be looking at rebuilding the engine using performance cams and pistons, and then starting out on intercoolers, larger turbo, etc.
Alternatively, you could do what some of the more extreme modders do and transplant a higher performance engine into the car - though again, this isn't common practise on these forums, so if you've got questions related to what engine/gearbox combination would be best, then this probably isn't where you'll get all the answers you'd need.
All that said, if you do get your car running a lot more to your satisfaction, then please let us all know as we actually do like to see a 406 with a lot of grunt under the hood

its a MOD i dont know why people do
as highlander said sum1 on this forum found out what you say no noise
it turned out to be because the turbo was a low pressure turbo

Re: Does having more boost make the dump valve sound better?
what is the standard boost of an sri? 8psi? as a starlet glanza is 0.8 bar standard boost and their dump valves are louder, but i suppose it is 3-4 psi more.

Re: Does having more boost make the dump valve sound better?
A loud dump valve only makes that noise because it is atmospheric (discharging its compressed air to outside) all standard turbo'd cars have a recirculating dump valve which is very difficult to hear.
You do not want to go increasing the boost on a standard 406 without considering the fuelling and engine cooling for starters......
I actually get a bit annoyed when folk think that the 406 is some kind of Turbo-super-sports car because it isn't. They fitted a turbo to give it more torque, make it more flexible to drive, and to compete with the "16 valve" brigade back in 1995 who were churning out 150bhp motahs by the dozen. The beauty of the 2.0T is its lazy torquey character, it was never a street-racer.

Re: Does having more boost make the dump valve sound better?
Which is a fair point. Welly, what about the SRi turbo engine; wasn't that a 2.0 litre 16v turbo? If that's true, isn't it a more sporty kind of lump, and better suited to a bit of extra tuning than the 8v turbo lump in the other cars?Welly wrote:The beauty of the 2.0T is its lazy torquey character, it was never a street-racer.
Personally I've never owned a turbo; all my cars have been naturally aspirated. I seem to recall hearing that the naturally aspirated 2.2 engine found in the D9 406 is designed as a replacement for the 150 HP turbocharged lumps found in the older D8s.

Re: Does having more boost make the dump valve sound better?
The 2.0T was the old-skool 8-valver, in fact 8 valve cars are nice and torquey by design. 16 valve engines can feel a bit flat until the higher revs.
Adding a turbo to this engine was the easiest way to squeeze some more power out of it until the next generation of engines came along with 16 valve heads, 160bhp and better economy and emissions

Re: Does having more boost make the dump valve sound better?
The D8 Exec Turbo and D8 SRi shared the same 150bhp XU10J2TE 2.0 8v turbocharged engine in saloon and estate form. It was never fitted to coupés in the factory (although I know of at least two that had it retro-fitted). The Exec turbo had nearly top trim (missing the auto-dimming mirror, cruise control, trip computer and JBL amp) and the SRi was pretty much poverty spec with a special (vile) red-on-grey cloth used for the door cards and seats. The engine was retired at the end of the D8 runs and the D9 series got the 160bhp EW12J4 2.2 16v n/a engine in SRi (half-leather, reasonable spec) trim for saloon/estates and the usual trim on coupés, where it didn't have the SRi designation.highlander wrote:what about the SRi turbo engine; wasn't that a 2.0 litre 16v turbo? EDIT: I forgot... the XU10J2TE was also used in the Citroen Xantia Activa.
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Re: Does having more boost make the dump valve sound better?
Yeah, the D8 SRi interior is ghastly
The D9 SRi 2.2 is definitely very nice - I went to view one for sale in Dunfermline the year before last, but the thing was shagged; a real shed. Pity.
Wouldn't it be nice for Peugeot to have offered a turbocharged version of the 2.2 16v lump...
I had a look online and found these guys in the Netherlands, offering a kit that allows you to turbocharge any EW16 engine:
http://www.dp-engineering.nl/EN/product ... _compo.php
It's a bit steep though, but they do promise some tremendous HP gains. If I won the lottery, I would buy a second Coupe and go and pay them a visit.

Re: Does having more boost make the dump valve sound better?
the noise from the DV is dependent on its design to since you said you have a baily one id guess this is the one u have which do produce a hissing sound than a chirp

for a more chirpy sound id sugest a HKS type one like this as they have different funnel fit ments to alter the sound

but as people have already said pressure is a factor to

Can't you just get a pa speaker, link it to an mp3 player and hook it up to your clutch pedal so it makes a "slerp!" sound every time you change gear?
