hi all

hello

iv just got my self a 2001, hdi 110 406 saloon exe
wonderfull car apart from a few fauilts
the car has dont over 150k now, with 'some' history,

how hard is it to do a cam belt on one of these?


theres also a problem with the clutch, its right at the end of its travel, and it judders pulling away in first, is there any way to test a DMF with out stripping it down?

Hi general & welcome aboard 8)

Cambelt's not too bad - half a day for a competent DIY'er and a couple of hours for the jaspers of this world.

Most people would probably recommend fitting a solid flywheel conversion & clutch kit together. I've heard a failing DMF has a characteristic judder and noise, but have no personal experience to go by.

iv just looked at some soild flywheel conversion kits

what will it feel like,
iv owned diesels before without a DMF, and drove just fine, why are they fitted to these?

doing stuff dont really scare me, i can do most things, its just when things go wrong, i go in a mardy :)

are you sure you want to lower it ? i know a few people who regreted doing it and changed back
it will take away the comfyness of the 406 8)

well the ride is to wallowing for me just want it a little bit firmer
only had to get this car, as iv grown up and got my own house now lol

Get yourself a strut brace from a V6 Coupe:

Cheapest and most effective way of firming up the handling on the 406 (the part will fit on the saloon, estate and coupe, regardless of engine type; Peugeot only factory-fitted them to the V6 Coupe though); there are a whole bunch of people on here (myself included) that vouch for how much of a difference it makes.

Go down that route first.

Additionally, you should also check your tyre sizes are correct (my saloon ended up with tyres that were too narrow, which ruined the handling - fitted some Bridgestone B250 tyres for my 15inch wheels, in size 195/65/R15, though some 406s came with 16in rims), and the tyre pressure is correct (34 PSI / 2.34 bar), and that there's plenty of good tread on them. With a car as big and heavy as the 406, any errors in the tyre size or pressure can make the car feel pretty sub-par.

Once you've got your strut brace and you know your tyres are fine, and you still think it needs stiffer suspension / lowering, then go for it - just make sure you don't lower it more than 40mm otherwise you'll need new shocks as well as springs.

If you're just after a little bit firmer ride, I'd suggest simply replacing the springs and shocks with new stock ones and replacing all the bushes. A 10+ year old car is not going to feel anywhere near as firm as when it left the factory. A strut brace may also help, but I think it's a placebo with a lightweight engine in the front

Light? I thought the HDi was a big heavy lump, especially the 110 as it has the intercooler and associated pipework.

It didn't help the Coupe as much as it helped my 1.8, but I suspect that's because the Coupe has a somewhat firmer chassis and lower ground clearance anyway. Maybe with the big V6 up front you'd notice it more on the Coupe (or rather, notice it more if you decided to remove it)

All 406's seem to have a high bite-point.

The DMF will sound chattery/squeeky on start up and shut down and also when coming on/off the clutch during changes. It may start slipping when the drivetrain is hot after a hour's drive or so and you'll notice a blip in revs as it slips around 2000 rpm in 5th.

Mine was like this for 3 years and 25,000 miles and I sold it like it too.

When the DMF really spews it then it will produce a bouncy engine idle and even start catching the bell housing (that's when you know it *really* needs to come out) :o

I like your old Nova Saloon - I bet that was a real dark horse considering the Saloon was the weapon of choice for most Grandma's at the time :shock:
