Thrust bearing on its way out - what next ?

Seems that the bearing is on its way out on my 406, as there's a grinding sound when I press the clutch pedal.

I've booked it in today and the local independent Peugoet guy who I normally take it to has recommended putting in a new clutch while he's at it. £300 sounds fair enough (?)

I have a 406 2.0 HDI 90 Estate that's now done 163k.

I'm beginning to wonder what other costly repairs might be round the corner.

In the past year, I've had:

Drive shaft changed (os) - Due to broken ABS ring
Link rod (os) - changed when drive shaft was changed
New disks and pads all round (ok - this is kinda stuff is to be expected now and again)
New back box on exhaust
Broken front spring (ns), which took out a drive shaft, link rod and tyre

I rekon I'll have spent about £1200 over the past year when I get the clutch done .

I use my car for my job and my philosophy has been to run it into the ground, as I take a car allowance rather than company car, due to tax.

Does anyone agree that I'm now actually arriving at the ground, or is it worth forking out for potentially more expensive jobs moving forward ? What might those jobs be ?

if the thrust bearing is on the way out it makes sense to change the whole clutch to save doing it later and 300 sounds fair
if you havnt done the cambelt i would do that as well as if it goes it will cost big bucks

I forgot to mention that on my original list. I also changed the cam belt at the last service.

At 163k it'll be due a new clutch soon anyway, and £300 is a good price for the amount of work required

Drive shaft changed (os) - Due to broken ABS ring

ABS ring failure is common in any car of this age/mileage. They are however available as separate parts, so replacing the driveshaft isn't necessary if your other one goes...

New back box on exhaust

Exhausts rust, it's not a Peugeot concept

As long as you keep the car in good condition there shouldn't be any nasty surprises, although you should look at getting the other front spring changed soon as a precaution (and to even up the car!)

One thing that's worth saying is since it's an estate, you should keep the rear centre seat belt buckled up when not in use, and feed out some slack when dropping the seat down. Sometimes the reel can jam and that can cause problems.
