Hello from lincolnshire

Post by markyp130 »

Hello,
I have just bought a 406 2.1 td LX family estate(P reg) and iam working my way through a few problems with the car. With the help and information from this club i have already disconnected the recirc flip motor as it was clicking.
Other problems to sort are:
Drivers window closes then reopens (safety?)
Rear lamp not operating until tapped(connections?)
Engine turns over slowly but starts first time(clean battery terminals?)
Code display on radio and no code in manual(find code or new radio)

The milage is 135000 and the cambelt and water pump was replaced at 68000 miles ,so will need replacing soon i think. Hopefully just the belt as i am on a tight budget but want the car to be as reliable as possible. I am happy to tackle any job or at least have a go. I have checked the engine for leaks and noises, oil and coolant levels ok and filters replaced by last owner so looks good. Then removed all the wheels today and checked brakes, bearings, bushes/linkages and CV boots, and found in good condition.
When i start the car i do not have to enter a code onto the keypad and no green/red light displayed so i guess it has been disconnected?.
Are there any faults or other areas i need to check before i start using it, as i have a holiday in scotland in 2 weeks time with a 800 miles round tripthen daily usage, finally what mpg can i realistically expect....
Thank you

Ho there, welcome :cheesy:

Umm, if you can get the window shut, try resetting the ecu - hold the button down until you can hear a faint click inside the door. It sounds like the anti-pinch feature is working overtime, perhaps the window rubber has moved and it's seeing something stopping it closing before it thinks it's closed. Had similar issues with my old Vauxhall Senator, quite a common problem on those when the weather was cold and the rubbers harder than usual.

Rear lamp - Take it to bits & give it a clean.

Not sure on the starter, it might be voltage issues (is the battery ok and is the starter motor getting the full voltage from the battery?) or it could be the starter motor is dying (bound to die at the worst possible moment  ).

I think someone on here said they had access to the codes or knew a way of finding out, but you could always use it as an excuse to replace it with something tastier :cheesy:

Not sure on keypads as I've never had one, it could be disconnected but I think there's a way of turning them off permanently, I'm sure someone else will know.

Cam belt is fairly crucial on them, unlike the HDi it will kill the engine. 67,000 miles should be ok for a while, if it's true, but if I'd just bought the car I'd be looking to change that asap for peace of mind.

Mpg? How long is a piece of string? Depends how you drive and where you'll be driving it. I think the only thing I can say is that, unless you drive like a nutter, you'll be pleased

Welcome in mate! :)
Things to check before your journey; antirollbar droplinks & bushes front & rear & the rear top links. These will cause clonking noises as you drive & the rear top links cause play in the rear wheels when they wear.
As Steve says I reckon your starter motor is getting tired, mine did that before it gave up completely.

Hello and thanks for the welcome.
I have checked the drivers door and found the top edge of the door card forcing the rubber seal onto the window, pulled it away and it works ok. So just need to remove the door card and fix :) Nice when things are simple. Cleaned the light connections and sprayed with WD40 all ok, Next to find the radio code?
Thanks for your help so far....
