So,

I'll be in London for 3 days in Jan - anyone got suggestions as to what to see and do, besides Buckingham Palace, the British Museum and crying in the street because we lost The Ashes?

The Science Museum is pretty good, Bucks palace you might just about be able to get near , Oxford Street shopping, Trafalgar Square, the London Eye, London Bridge, Soho (phwoarrr), even the Tube System is an eye-opener just for the experience

Be prepared though as it's mad down there and everything is a massive rush about and there's always eleventy million people everywhere that you want to be

Yeah all that stuff Welly said, especally the science museum . I usually manage a visit to the Tate modern (the mrs likes the art, I like the building and the walk accross the millenium bridge to get there ) then there's a river cruise, st paul's, westminster abbey, shakespere's globe is interesting. Go and see a west end show?

I took my wife to England a few years back, she was mad keen on seeing London Her first reaction was the Underground is... filthy (worse than Bulgaria). Don't wear your best clothes, you're less likely to be mugged too. Don't eat where the tourists go - some of the muggers have licences. Buckingham Palace is just an old building with a big railing around it so you can't get within throwing distance and there's no point in you hanging around in the cold because the queen won't invite you in for hot chocolate. There are plenty of museums, depending on what floats your boat (the wife wanted to see the Victoria & Albert, dull dull dull ).Go laugh at the prices in Harrods. Try not to snigger at how small "Big" Ben is.

Probably the wrong time of year for a river cruise...

Funny you should say that re: muggers

Everyone I know who lived in London for a while whether for work or education, have been mugged at least once. One incident sounded potentially quite violent too

Strangely though, they do come back saying it's an amazing city!

Go see Dirty Dancing at the Aldwych Theatre. Its really good

You've got to have a wander around Hamleys at Christmas time, and you've got Carnaby street round the corner & Picadilly Circus!
Recommend a visit to the Hard Rock Cafe for a bite to eat too, Green Park tube station a couple of stops up from Picadilly.

Ive been to london twice but it was during the intense heat of the summer, there was no wind, and no private transport so for a munchie like me in a big city it was scary.

Another vote for the Science Museum from me. Some of the older displays haven't aged well, but nevertheless some of the exhibits are really amazing. (My favourites are the MF 780 combine, and the paper models of polyhedra.)

Tate Modern is also good. In some cases -- for example the silverware suspended from the ceiling -- it is more interesting to see how the thing was made and installed rather than the thing itself.

If you're looking for a special (i.e., expensive) meal then I can recommend Vinoteca. Its not far from Oxford Street (Marble Arch end) and I thought it was excellent. They match the wine to the meal for you, bringing a different glass of wine with every course.

And yes, the sewer trains really are quite stinky. End very expensive.

Cheers for the responses - Oh and I take back my comments about the Ashes, seems like there has been a slight comeback on our behalf!

I have some friends who are living in London (50% of Australia), so I'll see what they think when I actually arrive! Wouldn't mind doing the Millenium Wheel thingy, Buckingham Palace and a couple of museums - but I'd be just as happy to walk around and absorb everything in, as it's my first trip of the giant island!

I wonder if I can get some parts into my baggage, or ship them back?

Had a good walk around and been to wesminster abbey/buckingham palace! Thought it was going to be much colder! Tube is good fun and super quick although it's not cheap - walking is more interesting!

Oh and all of the 406's are clapped out cabs
