Still loosing battery power

Post by Mastiff »

Guys!!

Im still loosing charge from my battery. Now when the car is running she runs perfectly.....The battery gives out 14.2 on idle and so does the alternator. Under full load the battery gives out 13.9 and the alternator giving 14.0.

I Emailed a mate of mine and got some replys as he is an engineer so asked round his work for me. This particular answer intrested me but where on earth is it.....

look down the back of the battery (or ecu), there is a big relay on its own wiring harness, change this. common fault, costs about 15 quid for a new one.

cant remember the name of it right now though! had to change it on my 306 hdi, cant miss relay, its 3 times as wide as a normal relay.

The I have had this reply......

The most likely reason that your battery is going flat, is because you have fitted an after market radio!
When a non Peugeot radio is fitted, it shafts the electronics that the system operates, even with the new radio turned off, the system remains live, causing the battery to drain!
Refitting the old radio may now be in vein, as damage to the system may have happened, and still allow the system to drain!
To test, disconnect the battery, and fully recharge it.
Remove the radio from the car, and use the car without to see if the problem is then rectified

And then this......

it is also possible for dioes to go so the alternator will actualy discarge the battery all the time the engine isn't running

So..... These are the replys!! Now to the masters of 406's!! What do you all think? I cant see fitting an aftermarket HU being a problem considering it has its original stereo in.

As for that relay......I dont have a clue where that is!!

Thanks in advance,

Paul

The relay might be the fuel pump relay, it's in the ecu box on early HDis and in the ecu on later ones :frown: What year is yours? Hold on............ 2001. Early? Rubbish, I can't see any changes on Service Box :?

19207L RELAY 15.94 GBP

I think that's about 15 quid.

Or it could be the glowplug relay - ah, not at 47 quid it aint.

Other stuff, yes diodes, if they break down the current flows the other way so I guess so. Radios can go faulty and drain the battery. Not sure if that's from new though...

You could pull the radio anyway, just to be sure...

Steve you are a legend......Thank you :D

Interesting about the fuel pump relay as when I turn my car off I can hear a buzzing kind of noise......Its like a noise that when you go to first start a car up, that buzz noise that lasts a few seconds......Well mine seems to keep on thinking about it?

I have a pic of my ECU.......Will upload it in a mo and if you wouldn't mind telling me if its beside it or worse.......inside the ECU!

I reckon so. I've read on here a few times that the relay is inside the ecu on later HDis and I've taken it as gospel, but actually checking it out I realised it aint so. None of them are.

I'm not sure if you had this fault before you changed the stereo or after... (dots meaning are the two related perhaps?)
