Broken bolts.

Post by FarmerPug »

Hmmm, you will laugh at this, and probably call me a bit of a tube but anyhow i did it.
Went to screw on the rocker cover to my suzuki, broke one bolt tightnening it down, and another broke when i went to take it out, a wide selection of the finest foul language of the english language was used at the time. So yup 2 bolts stuck in there, how does one remove them, cant get plyers at them, broke quite flush into the holes. Ive been told that the rocker cover is under no pressure, its just a lid, and i was told that 2 bolts are sufficent is this true, could i remove the offending stubs, stumps or whatever a broken bit of a bolt is called, and how is it done?
And guess what the fecking paint and primer all flaked off, ahhh f*ck.
Even better the tube of instant gasket burst in my hand, a also broke one of the spotlights, and cut myself climbing from under the jeep, im finding getting the sump on difficult, and i have a crick in the neck.

Leave the broken bits of the bolts in and get some Granville gasket stuff it sets like concrete,
it wont leak with that stuff,

when painting rocker covers your best off with a paint that sets well where its near oil ,
high temp paint works well on rocker covers but ive only yet found it in a silver colour :|

as of presure on rocker covers ithink thats down too conditions of engines some engines are under preasure at top end,
but ithink you will be ok if you use a gasket maker stuff - dont bother with the standard gaskets there crap imho

the rocker cover of my engine has a noticeable air hole, going to a vacuum pipe in the air filter so i assume very little if any pressure will ever be there.

Exhaust paint should do the job, I've seen that in satin black in bike shops.

You could try a stud extractor or reverse drill bit.
If there's enough stud to get a drift on you could try tapping it out; get a screwdriver on the edge of the shank and tap it round, this works more often than not.

unfortunatley not its broke about 1mm down into the hole, could i drill it out and hope the bolt when its much thinner will crumble out of the exhisting threads?

:arrowu: Have a go at drillin it out,
start off with a small drill bit and drill thru the centre of the snapped bolt then work your way up with diferent size bits,
if you feck up the thread Heli-coil it ,

:arrowu: just try drilling it out and go from there mate,
keep pouring abit of oil in there as your drilling to stop the bit burning out,
you might get away with not having to Re thread it if you take your time drilling it out. :|

Just be careful you don't snap the drill or you'll be proper fecked. Get yourself some cobalt drill bits from somewhere like Toolstation & some drilling lubricant.
I still say try a reverse thread drill bit though.
