sorry its my first - rear drums / bearings.

Post by lukamon »

hey guys, just joined as i need a bit of help with my (well, my dads) 406. its a 1.8 LX with drums at the rear.

the only experience i have with drum brakes was with my ancient fiesta when i changed the rear wheel bearings.

the guy at the motor factors has given me a set of hubs + bearings, but heres the thing. they look like disk brake hubs. when i changed the bearings on the fiesta they came with the outer drum as a sealed unit and bolted onto the suspension arm, no bearing puller needed.

is this what the 406 should be like or do i need a bearing puller to get them off?

many thanks,
Luke.

Welcome Luke :D

You don't need a bearing puller, you just need to taKe off the bearing cap, undo the big nut and pull off the hub with your hands.

To fit the new hub, push the hub onto the shaft and fit the nut, tighten the nut correctly and refit the hub cover.

If they were disc hubs they would have ABS rings on them.

Apparently it's the same part, the rear disks actually incorporate a smaller drum (for the handbrake).

Just check you have the right part (there's two different numbers of teeth for the ABS) before you take it all to bits.

thanks steve! okay that all seems good then, ive watched the video on youtube of a guy changing the bearings on his 406 and he definately needed a puller!

this is v. confusing! :(

edit: its a non- abs model. (we're talking really basic spec here!)

I think that's our first non-abs 406! Some say you need a puller, some say the more-or-less come off in your hand, I've no idea myself.

I replaced my brother's 1.9td non-ABS rear hubs in 20 minutes, no puller required, they just pull off, at least they did on his and every other i've ever done.
