need BIG HELP and fast

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

need BIG HELP and fast

Post by swampyv6 »

right last night the v6 coupe dies on me.

aa man diagnosed a dead fuel pump after lots of him cranking the battery was flat.

this morning i took the battery off to charge it, and took a plug out, it was dry no fuel at all on it.

just reconeected the battery, alarm goes off and lights flashed, turned off with the remote.

put keys in ignition and all the dash lights come on.

try to start it and nothing and all the lights went out.

have checked all the fuses but cant find one thats not working

any ideas??

Is power getting to the fuel pump? Is it running?

right then

i have taken the cover off the fuel pump and the cable on the very left only has 8.5v going to it when the ignition is on, im assuming this is the fuel pump feed wire?

if so shouldnt it read 12v??

fuel pump doesnt prime or make any noise when the key is in the ignition

have taken the cap off the fuel rail at the front and pressed the valve and no fuel comes out

I'd say give it 12 volts but there's also the level sender and I've no idea which wire is which - perhaps that wire is the fuel gauge :? Tell you what, if you disconnect the relay and that feed drops to zero flash 12 volts on it, see if the pump twitches. I don't think it's going to expect less but you never know...

When you find one I'll stick it in the Knowledge Base :(

Did the 8 volts go when you disconnected the fuel pump relay? With the ignition on one must be the fuel gauge - ordinarily I'd have said two but I'd have thought the other leg would be an earth and I've no idea how these are wired up since they started fitting fuel injection to cars  Jasper would be the chap you need to ask.

Off to look at Autodata...

Autodata says 2 (+) and 4 (eth), which could tie in with that earth you found if there is only 4 pins.

I've already found errors on Autodata so please be careful!

And now I'm panicking in case you put 12 volts across the level sensor and blow yourself up  Can we assume there is no power getting to the pump and head off to the double relay now?

sounds like a duff battery. mine went a month ago in very much the same way. Was certain it was a duff earth connection, but after changing the battery (to get my car the last 50 yards to my house ) it's worked perfectly

old battery was only about a year old!

few more details

when the ignition is on, the idle control valve is buzzing and vibrating, im sure it shouldnt do this

if i disconeect the doub;e relay under the bonnet i still get the same readings under the bonnet, ;eading me to think that the wire on the left of the plug isnt the fuel supply one.

battery is fully charged and is failry new and passed a discharge test thing

the car will fun for a few seconds on easy start, i have ZERO pressure in the fuel rail and when the keys get put in the ignition there is no priming of the pump
