It's needed if you want to code a new key to your car, possibly other uses too.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6 -speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Not sure about that - but it can't hurt.
I needed the code to reprogramme my car to recognise the key - it lost synchronisation when I took the battery off and wouldn't respond to the sequence in the manual. In these cases, the dealer can reprogramme it, for about £25 IIRC - if you haven't got the code it's another £25 to 'recover' it.

You have two options:
1) Pay far, far too much to the dealer.
2) Initiative. (Clue - this could encompass using the search function, or some enlightened Googling).
