Noisy HDi Engine :(

Post by GeordieBoy »

Just seemed to happen tonight, but a m8 said it sounds very rough, like tappets or something.
Any idea what could be the cause? Its due for a service now, but aint got the cash for that until a few mths time.

Hi,

On getting my pug hdi serviced, it was suggested that i get the bottom crank pulley changed ( as i was getting a cambelt change ), but could not afford it, i asked the pug dealer when i should get it changed and/or when i know if it needs changing, he said when you hear a knocking noise.

This may be the problem ( have no idea about the HDI engines), but any question about the nice simple old DT engines i can answer

Many Thanks,

Andy

The bottom pulley can give a ticking noise, I can get it after a long run sometimes.

If your oil is old that can make hydraulic lifters more noisey, how long since last oil change?

Its actually overdue 200miles for a service, so last oil change would be about 8,000 miles ago (its done almost 119k. So I know it needs doing, but lack of funds atm, need another 4-8wks b4 I can afford it, altho I could afford an oil change and get a m8 to do it. I went back out in it last nite, and it sounded ok to me, def quieter than it was. It was actually Trem1's son who told me it was fooked last nite when I pulled into the car park. Gonna get a m8 to check it out today, and poss take it to a garage I know. Garage is part of the local cruising forum, so I know there will check it out and lmk what is what with little/no cost to me unless it needs repairs.

The bottom pulley is the problem here me thinks. Mine has a weird metal shim/ring in it that made a noise, so I pulled it out and its fine now.
I caked my pants when I heard it first!

Is this what you mean?

Pulley Failure

If the pulley separates and the belt falls off then fine, but if it separates and gets all wrapped up in a mess near the cam belt end thats not so good.

Yep, thats it, but the shards of shim doesnt come from where his arrow is showing, it comes from round the rim. Im going to remove the pulley at the weekend and effect my own repair. (I am an engineer/ tight arsed Scot after all!)
I will advise better on the situation on Monday, but no way am I paying 120 quid for a pulley!!!

the arrow is pointing to the bright surface tell tale sign, the shim did not come from this area where the arrow is pointing, so your shim could be in the correct area

Its like a loud tapping/knocking noise coming from the engine, bottom pulley also looks a little wobbley as well. Thats the 1st thing I looked at last nite.
