Breakdown or Recovery service recommendations.

Post by jasper5 »

On Sunday my son is travelling down to Daventry from Lancashire to his latest every 8 weeks apprenticeship training at the Volvo Training Centre, it will be the first time he's driven a long distance on his own since he passed his test and I'd like to be sure he could get home if he had a problem....what do people think would be best to sign him up to?

Thanks for any advice :D

The AA have always been brilliant to me - in the end I just had to ring up and say....."yeah it's Welly with the 406" and they knew who I was

The only thing I can thoroughly recommend is having the service that BRINGS YOU HOME and not to the nearest garage place. This type of cover costs more but is well worth it, I wouldn't want my car dropping off at 'Welly's Motors' in Daventry and then told to find your own way home :(

'Bring you home' for the win, especially if you live near a friendly pug mechanic.

Knew someone who had an Alfa 147, timing belt snapped. AA towed it to the nearest garage who didn't have a clue. Getting it to the Alfa specialist with a good rep would've been another couple hundred quid!

I remember travelling home on a cold winter's Sunday night, 50 miles from home with Mrs Welly and the two Welly-juniors, in the Honda Integra when the Dizzy failed on a *busy* stretch of the A1 dual carriageway through Stamford.........with Mrs Welly screaming "oh god, don't stop on this road" I managed to crawl the car off onto a slip road and call for help.....it was dark and crappy down under the A1 standing in dog sh*t and other peoples piss but we were off the main road (the CAT was glowing hotter than the sun having had neat petrol thrown at it for 200 yards and I thought it was going to ignite something  ).

Later, at 01:30am the Honda slid majestically back onto my driveway, looking sorry for itself and we all slid through the front door and into bed :|

Thanks everyone for the suggestions :D , i'll make sure we get him a "get you home" cover.

I know Stamford, Welly, I used to have an internet friend who worked in Stamford for a company selling legal software solutions to solicitors.

I've been with the RAC for a few years (had to join on the spot when the LX drowned £££ :frown: )
The service is very good and they too cover the person not the vehicle so my bike is covered as well.

we have family cover with the RAC and it covers the person not the car, we have everything ie: homestart, roadside, relay, onward travel and hotel paid for if needed, it costs us £18 per month and covers 5 of us inluding motorbikes.we just divide the cost between us so we pay £4 each per month

I called the RAC when my Omega blew a hole in the top hose & we were stuck on the A34 near Didcot on a busy Saturday afternoon. '5 hours minimum' to get someone out to us, I was told, despite having 'priority response' or some such as my wife is disabled. (This was 2004, IIRC).

Bodged it & limped it home, cancelled the RAC next working day.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)
