My 2.1Td runs at 70-75 degrees which is about right i think, as diesels tend to run cooler than petrols due to being more thermally efficient . If your thermostat fails it normally fails open,so as soon as you start the engine coolant is being pumped around the engine and through the radiator. Under normal operation the thermostat will not open until the set temperature has been reached. If your radiator is getting hot before the engine is up to temperature or when you start driving the temperature gauge drops your thermostat is passing(failed). Its straight forward to check and replace a passing thermostat, but if the temperature gauge is constant when up to operating temperature it is working ok.

thought a quick update was in order as i replaced the thermostat housing and thermostat kit this morning, turns out the plastic housing WAS leaking  . The temp gauge stays at a steady 80deg now. Having spent 45mins bleeding all the air out of the system the car drives much better, and fuel consumption is also better (50+ mpg mixture of town and motorway). Cheap fix happy days! :D

When I first bought my 1.9 TD a couple of weeks ago it would get up to 70 and stay there unless stuck in really slow traffic, heater blew lovely and warm though within a few minutes. After reading these posts I changed the thermostat, cheap change at £8 from eurocarparts, and now it goes up to 80 and that's about as warm as it's got so far.

Mine sits at about 88-90 degrees. Last year it wouldn't get above 75, like many others on here a new thermostat and a change of coolant and it's back where it should be. There's a guide on here about how to change the coolant and it's a doddle - any idiot should try it - I do a coolant change for winter and summer now because I liberate the antifreeze from work!

Mine's an HDI 90 by the way. Only trouble was the bloody thermostat seemed a little pricey, I remember years ago paying £7 for one for my Peugeot 309, the one for the 406 was somewhere around the £15-£20 mark for a QH one - was a little shocked tbh.

just need to state this and see what others think

over the past week i have changed thermostat . both coolant temperature sensors (the blue & brown one's)

and now my xud sits just under 90 :?

i keep having to watch the pin because i keep thinking its gonna overheat due to it always being around 80.

it does drop to 80 tho on a good run over 10 minutes non stopping. round town it sits under 90.

i also put the engine at 2k revs for about 10 minutes.

my gauge goes upto about 93 then goes back down to 88. it did this about 4 times in 10 minutes . up and down. so i know my thermostat is working as it should
