I've been a-snooping again

Post by steve_earwig »

Hi peeps, I spent a good few hours this morning trying to research the old "where's my sodding redundant brake light connector?" problem, this time in French. While I was I snagged a few interesting looking threads:
Autoleads adaptor - http://www.forum-auto.com/marques/Peuge ... t15998.htm
HDi fuel pump death, including pictures of the POS in bits - http://www.forum-auto.com/pole-techniqu ... 367828.htm
Changing speedo transducer (including hand drawn pin out!) - http://www.forum-auto.com/pole-techniqu ... 209704.htm

And what I came for - http://peugeot-406.forumpro.fr/t1601-mo ... itesse-406 (same thing through Babelfish - http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_ur ... =Translate )

It appears the plug doesn't necessarily exist but it can be wired in (looking forward to putting a wire all the way from the ecu to the dash tidily :? ). Also I found a few more sites, including one in Czech (I think) that said beware configuring the BSI with a clone as it can put bad commands into it, which can be triggered while the car is going and CRASH the BSI  Hmm, sounds like fun. Unfortunately I turned AVG's link scanner off because it slows everything down too much, so consequently one of the links I followed contained a virus which crashed Firefox and I lost everything I hadn't bookmarked then :(

Oooh, I forgot. There's one 406 failure on the French forums that seems as common as the com2000 but I've never seen it before - air conditioning death due to a relay in the BSI. Ok, so I lost the thread  but it's easy enough to find another: http://www.coupe406.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?p=353817 (the pic's about half way down, for those of you watching in black & white)

I bet you could spend a long time looking for the fault if you didn't know...

I just wish I could find the thread that went with this pic:

There were diagrams and all sorts

There's loads of translators on the web, babelfish is good enough to understand and it will translate whole pages (mostly...) but this one's brilliant - http://www.e-rjecnik.net/, especially Croat to English.

Interesting stuff, Steve.

IIRC replacing the aircon relay in the BSI was covered on the coupe forum about 2 years ago - some Dutch guy posted loads of pics. I asked if he had a list of BSI relays & their function, but never got an answer......

The lift pump stuff made me think it's possibly the gauze blocking that kills them - is it sensible to try & clean it before it dies, I wonder?

On the redundant brake switch, have you established you can''t fool it by linking the 2 ecu inputs? (maybe it does an initialisation check that 'finds' this)? I'm thinking that if you worked a relay off the existing switch, to provide the 2nd signal it couldn't tell the difference. Be easy to rig up next to the ecu.....

If you want me to check anything on mine, let me know.

I reckon all I need to do is give the pin on the ecu 12 volts from anywhere and link the 2nd brake pedal switch to the clutch switch as they're both normally closed and connected to the same fuse. But I'd like to do it pwopperly if I can... Thanks for the offer but don't bother looking at yours, I know the connector's supposed to come out of cable PR 10 with the blue and yellow BSI connectors, I had part of the dash in bits yesterday and I'm pretty sure I would have found it if it was there. Now I've found out what the pin descriptions on Autodata are about (it's like battleship!) I'll be able to see if anything is connected to the relevant pin.

The a/c problem was a new one on me, it seems endemic on the French sites. I'll have to go look at that.

Aye mustard mitt I'd not thought about any filter on the lift pump, even after all the threads about blocked filters on TDs. Failure seems like sudden death though, you'd think if the filter was blocking up there'd be some warning signs - loss of pressure on full power etc. and the traditional anti pollution warning. Clean it before it dies? Can I borrow your crystal ball when you're done? :supafrisk:

Holy smokes  Look at this little lot http://www.coupe406.com/documents/Tutor ... airage.htm

May I draw sir's attention to "Réparation du relais de climatisation sur le BSI (12 Mo) par Jean-Marc" - which includes what all the relays are in the BSI.

Good stuff, that.

I suppose we shouldn't be surprised if our Gallic friends seem to be a little more knowledgeable about their native vehicles than we are.

My french is just about up to following the gist of these articles, but some phrases, e.g.

Voilà, vous avez économisé 500€ environ

stand out fairly clearly.

Did you happen on a French 406 saloon /estate site by any chance?

i wonder do the french understand the system behind locating the fuses?
Good resource, safari doesnt translate but google chrome does, and its easy to read, would the french know if we used a translator and asked them questions.

They sure would, but they're usually pretty good at cutting non French speakers some slack.

I usually test translation software by translating from English into French, and then back translate the French into English. If it is still understandable then you're usually good to go. If it translates back as utter gibberish you're going to have to tweek a few words to make it understandable.

I've just returned to live in the UK after spending 5 years living in France, I can get by day to day with the local lingo, but I'm not fluent by any means.

It's funny, I did know a fair bit of French from learning it at school but now I've been here almost 7 years it all seems to have gone :|

Errr, here's one http://www.passion406.com. I've not really been paying attention but there seems to be loads of coupé forums, plus general car ones and Pug-specific but I think that's the only forum that's equivalent to ours. Apart from the snowing hearts thing, that's just stupid.
