Rear noises

Post by Quinny1 »

Just had the rear drop links replaced on my 406 HDi, but there is still a rattling/banging noise coming from the rear when going over bumps, and there is a slight vibration at +60mph, what are the possible causes?

(99 HDi, 144k.)

the vibration over 60mph is probably the wheels. get them balanced and i will put money on the vibration going..

the rear knocking could be anti roll bar bush .

Vibration and/or steering wobble can be down to uneven REAR tyre wear....

and why is it you can't fart quietly anymore once you reach 45 or so?

Were the stabilizer arms replaced, or just the drop links? I had knocking on the back that I tracked down to the stabilizers (the rod with a bush on one end and a ball-joint on the other), changed them both and noise has gone. Hope that helps.

Are any of these items non mot'able?

Reason I ask, is I have a rattle from the rear that has been there for years ( only on bad bumps )
Obviously keeps passing the mot
Maybe I need to be there this year when it's being done instead of dropping it off before work and picking up after

If there is excessive play in the supsension then it will be a failure, you can check yourself by jacking the car up and grabbing at the wheel with your hands at opposite sides so one hand pushes while the other hand pulls. In my case the problem was easily detected with the wheels off the ground. In your case it may be the exhaust banging around or something similar, especially as it's passed a few mot's like it.

It's certainly worth jacking it up and having a looksy, should take no longer than 30 min's to check both sides.
