Re: Turbo Diesels
Diesels are fine and torquey but it all comes in one massive lump - and then it's gone so overall are very often slower than the petrol engine'd car, plus you need to get pretty handy with the gear changes to make use of that short power band.sirwiggum wrote:Mk1 Fabia VRS had more torque 30-70 than a Porsche Boxster
There's an old saying which goes.....you Race brake horse power but you Drive torque.

It's better to have a small real advantage than the possibility of a greater one.
I don't know what your Uncle's on about either, is he ok? my Uncle got taken to a Mental Institution for exposing his testicles in the Library.
It wouldn't have been so bad if he hadn't had removed his testicles first with some carpet scissors

Re: Turbo Diesels
Well, another mate of mine bought a 530d today
I said, aren't you bothered about the car ingesting it's own oil
He said, No, it's down to the swirl valves, and it's being de-swirled and remapped

Re: Turbo Diesels
the m5 diesel, i seen i think its called a 535d M.
Anyhow if you got a coupe with a 3.0 v6 added a twin turbo setup, remapped it to work with the turbos, i dont think many diesels would keep up.
and that transit might not have the old 2.5 engine but it still sounds like it.

If the M is after it's classed as a Motorsport
so that's a 535 diesel motorsport as oppsed to being an M5 diesel

Re: Turbo Diesels
Plod - you wanna get your mate to check/change the crankcase breather filter a-top the engine, there's a modified one available from the dealer, these get neglected and block with wet oil mist/gunk. Primarily it leads to smoke but ultimately blocked engine breathing........and ingestion
There's plenty of info over on BMW Land forum.
Ironically, it is the emissions controls that force the engine to break itself
heaven forbid that there should be the slightest whiff of exhaust fumes out the back

Re: Turbo Diesels
Mercedes benz diesels never seem to have this trouble. On paper of course they seem to have less power than the beemer diesels but they make much smoother engines.

Re: Turbo Diesels
If you want a BMW then do it properly and get a i6 petrol. (Actually, since my commute shortened from 30 to 10 miles I've been eying up 328s -- just to get it out of my system you understand)
Just look at some power & torque curves of petrol & diesel engines and its obvious that they behave completely differently. 406 hdi have near constant power and torque from 2000 to 3000 rpm. On a 328i it increases linearly from 2000 right up to 6000rpm, there's very little power at low rpm, but when you put your foot down they keep going long after diesel runs out of puff.
