Now What #∞

Post by steve_earwig »

A funny thing happened when I took my other half to work earlier, I pulled in at the stop and the Heap just died - engine dead, no panel lights, no mfd, nada. I was thinking maybe another dead battery but I turned the key to accessories and the battery light came up in the dash, so I turned it to run and everything came to life, turned to start and off it went

I'm not looking for ideas (I've checked the battery, connections and whatever else I can get to anyway) just, you know, sharing one of those unique Peugeot moments :cheesy:

Speaking of zones, mine has a 'dead zone'. If you move the key s-l-o-w-l-y from accessories to ignition, or vice-versa, there seems to be a bit in the middle where everything's off.

So, maybe, yours got bigger?

I tried messing with the key but I couldn't find any dead zone :frown:

Still, I've cheered myself up making a new smiley. Image

Does sound more like a total lack of lecky - interview the usual suspects, (earth connections, battery & terminals, any big cables or flexy braid bitz).

My Coupe is affectionately known as "Bitchin' Betty" (after the nickname given to the Central Aural Warning System found in the F-16 Fighting Falcon - the thing that shouts "PULL UP", and "LANDING GEAR", and "ENGINE FIRE" to let the pilot know there's a major issue).

Bitchin' Betty is fond of saying things like "Fuel Filler Cap Open", and "Navigation CD-ROM Unreadable".

On Tuesday, she wouldn't start the first two times I turned the key - the engine turned over and fired up, but immediately died. Third time was the charm, but I got the lovely "Engine Anti-Pollution Device Defective" message on the MFD, and the EML on the dash.

I think this is related to the Idle Air Control Valve, as the engine has been idling at anywhere between 1,000 and 1,500 RPM, purely at random (it normally idles at 850 RPM). I don't know where the IACV is on the 2.2 petrol engine though. I asked over at the Coupe Club forums, but nobody replied yet. Anyone here got any idea? Also, is it an expensive thing to replace?

I'm looking at the parts diagrams but I'm not sure either :? It could be something to do with this "air intake case" (1636 15 - the notes seem to refer to a change in January 2004 so not something you need to worry about) which also seems to include a temperature probe (1920 8Y) but as for an actual idle air bypass valve, I don't think it has one, rather something like the ES9J4S with a stepper motor operating the throttle butterfly which you'd notice any problems with elsewhere in the rev range.

Could be a temperature sensor, perhaps a code reading session might give a clue.

the only engine light i have ever got wasnt even a light it was the top up oil warning, the sensor is a bit cautious and thought there was no oil when i parked with one wheel on the kerb thus making the car sit at an angle. But a check at the dipstick confirmed that the oil was indeed full and just 1mm off the max mark.
I have however got the brake pad wear light, the airbag light and the abs light through various times.

I suppose thats part of the fun in owning a 406, seeing a new light on the dash is like collecting a new rare stamp to add to your collection.
