diesel tank taken out-now have probs starting
The idiot before me f*cked about with the diesel tank locking ring,so had a mechanic fit a new one.took it home & noticed it idling bad at junctions. Now when i try to start it,it takes ages.it happens almost to the point where the battery sounds like its gonna die.it eventually fires up but only after repeated attempts. anyone got any ides what this can be???air lock in fuel etc???driving me crazy, now.
forgot to mention-it fired up great before-always 1st time every time!

"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

sorry jamjar, but before i try that(theres kids in their beds so will try tomorrow),do you care to tell me your reason for me trying this? i'd like to know anyway just outta curiosity
omega if it is air-which i also think, how do i get the air out?
dont know if it makes any difference, but tried priming(ignition on & off a few times),but nothing! mines is a bosch type without the rubber primer thing.
i dont know too much about the way fuel is delivered in diesels but the way i see it,if the mechanic took the tank out to put a new locking ring on it(the guy before me just had a piece of plastic superglued across the top!),then surely there MUST be some air trapped somewhere!no?

crack a injector pipe off with the engine running
removing the fuel cap in case it is causing a vacume in the tank

Bosch or Siemens? With the Siemens there's no lift pump so any sort of leak will give you trouble.

Yes, diesel being sprayed in your face at 300+ bar (that being 300 times normal atmospheric pressure) will ruin your day.dogslife wrote:I think Martin's is an HDi

Re: diesel tank taken out-now have probs starting
sorry-its a bosch
steve what about you-you got a guess? the mechanic had to take my tank out completely as the last owner just superglue'd something over the hole under the back seat, and the mechanic couldnt get a new locking ring fitted because of the mess wi sealant or glue.what about air in the lines comin outta the tank etc.?i'll take the car back to mechanics 1st thing in the morning,,,BUT its not filling me with confidence after this?bugger being told i'll need a new lift pump or something, when all it was,was an air lock?!!

Re: diesel tank taken out-now have probs starting
Ah, if it's a Bosch then it should push any air out of the system in short order. When you turn the key to fun how long does it take the lift pump to stop running? Perhaps you could try running it twice. Clutching at straws here
It's the same pump so why would it have problems now? Did the mechanic reverse the pipes? Would it even run like that

Re: diesel tank taken out-now have probs starting
the push fit pipes on the sender unit in the tank will be pulling air in hence the bad starting, may need a new sender and pipes to fix this,iv'e done loads as i worked at pug for years.

Re: diesel tank taken out-now have probs starting
you cant reverse the pipe as there differant sizes.steve_earwig wrote:Ah, if it's a Bosch then it should push any air out of the system in short order. Re: diesel tank taken out-now have probs starting
that went through my head as well.could the pipes be put back on wrong, and engine start eventually? surely not(sigh!)
