Re: Focking Fucus!
Will either ber a 406 GLX 1.9TD or a MK3 TDDi Ghia X Mondie.
The Mondeo comes with electric leather front seats, puddle lights, RF Central Locking, footwell lights, cruise control, heated seats and a trip computer ontop of what the GLX 406 will have and will remap to 148bhp. So I get ST-TDCi grunt, good economy and good spec.
The 406 though I can run of Veggie oil, old engine oil, gearbox oil etc etc
If i get a 406 it would HAVE to be an estate for the 7 seat conversion and it's easier to turn into a D9 replica where the saloon you have to change the rear quaters. As I think a D9 conversion would be essential to make it look half as modern as the mondie does. And I'd have to scource some Leather seats, then I have the pain of fitted the electrics
Or maybe I'l come accross and executive? but they are rare and few and far between.
Goto take price into consierdation.
I could have a 148bhp, top of the range Mondeo with an old Mechanically pumped diesel engine for sub £1500?
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=p
If I could get something like that for £1100-£1200. And add a bluefin for £250 thats a 148bhp top fo the range Mondeo for £1350?
But I could get a nice GLX TD 406 for £700?
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=p
Timing belt, new seals in the pump, new fuel hoses, refurbed injectors, new fireseals and washers etc £300. And a stage one tune I could do myself. For £1000?
Then I goto think of the price of a leather interior, aftermarket cruise control, D9 front end etc etc
Also the Mondie is cheaper to insure?

If you're talking 1.9td you're talking over 12 years old, I'd expect that all the toys in a 12 year old Mondano would just be dead weight by that age.

Re: Focking Fucus!
plus half of those toys you dont really need ..
cruise controll ? WHY ? use your bloody foot thats what its for
footwell lights ? WHY ? open your bloody eyes
or if really necessery its piss easy fit those in a 406 ..
heated seats ? turn the heaters on ..
and a trip computer thats probably only 75% correct. them things are useless and tell lies.
you have to ask yourself do you really need all those and secondly in a FORD ?
you know you really want a 406 sam dont you
OR why not just buy a 1.9 exec ? all the extras and leather ... if it was my choise i would take the older 1.9 406 over the mondeo.
my mate has a mondeo ghia . always in the garage.

which engine is in that mondeo. im sure mondingos are re-nowned for their bad injector problems ..
another of my mates has a 1.4 turbo diesel fiesta . hes only had it a few years and spent more on injectors than it cost him for the car

Re: Focking Fucus!
That Mondeo has the TDDi - TDCi is the one with the injector problems, but both are a bit troublesome with the clutch & DMF. My white TDDi had the clutch & flywheel replaced at 70k & I drove a 53 plate TDCi 130 where the clutch was slipping a good un at 83k. With Mondeos though, it is worth bearing in mind that upgrades are just as cheap & electric leather seats are plug & play so don't automatically limit yourself to a Ghia X. A normal Ghia is only missing the bigger wheels & leather seats.

Re: Focking Fucus!
real easy yes, just wire them straight to the puddle lights or courtesy lights and you will have the pefect example of what happens when french electrics go bonkers.Gary406 wrote: footwell lights... its piss easy fit those in a 406 ..
cruise control on the motorway is fantastic, it keeps the speed constant so you just sit there and dont care about your foot, and because the speed is more constant the mpg seems to be slightly better with it. heated seats are necessary on leather otherwise its like sitting on a block of ice on a cold morning, pug leather seems to be of a better quality than the leather fords get. And with a peugeot you get a lion for a badge rather than the ford badge which simply is the word ford inside an oval. Which is good if you like lions.
get a hdi, dont put red diesel or parafin in it (which seems to have been the cause of the death of my banger HDI) and it will run perfectly, although yes the insurance group is higher, the insurance group for the 406 is higher than a nissan primera 1.8S, and yet when i ask for quotes the 406 is cheaper, although still in the 4 figure area.

its not as bad as it sounds, theres always a pre multiplex d9 if you dislike floppy indicator stalks. The benefit of the hdi engine without constantly indicating to the left.

It's more complicated, more expensive if it goes wrong, can only be run on diesel etc etc
OK The XUD is louder but theres naff all to go wrong and it will run on girraffe semen!

Re: Focking Fucus!
if its a bad thing to be complicated then hydropneumatic suspension is bad.
the hdi engine on the USB car is fine, its never gave any trouble at all, the hdi in the cow clap car obviously has a problem since it doesnt work for more than 1 minuite, it was run on bad diesel and so has broke, or the fuel pressure regulator has broke and i dont see any point in fixing it.
other than that the Hdi is a bit more enjoyable to drive, theres a bit more torque and power, and it can be remapped, and its more economical, and the interior heater warms up a tad faster.

Re: Focking Fucus!
INterior heat dosen't bother me too much really. I always left my XUD 15 mins every morning to warm up.
The only real reason theres a big gap between the HDi and XUD in fuel ecnonomy is because the HDi has much longer gears. I was planning either a 2.1TD or a HDi gearbox as a swap on my old one. If I get a new 406 then I'l be reploacing the gearbox.
XUD's can be tuned by hand for pleanty of power but as I'l be doing motorway driving mainly I'l be aiming for 20psi and maybe water/meths injection. Cruise control is about £250 for an aftermarket system and worth every penny.
Also if you blow up an XUD, £150 gets you a second hand engine. Think I'l keep a spare in the garage and have a look into overhauling it.
I'm looking for a car thats easy to work on, easy to find faults and something I can reply on. And for that an XUD is top of the pile

You won't fit an ML5 to a 1.9 XUD I'm afraid.
You could always put massive tyres on it

All HDi gearboxes and 2.1TD gearboxes are interchangable and bolt straight up? HDi gearbox conversion is popular on the 306's?

£150 for an xud engine, is cheap, but for £100 you can get a hdi engine with a car attached if you shop around.
