Rear Cigarette Lighter

How possible do you think it would be to wire up an extra cigarette lighter to the rear of the car? I was thinking that I might get away with stealing a feed off of the main one, but don't want to send the electrics into a wobbly. Main reason I want to do this is that we have an in car DVD set up that needs to be plugged in to the cigarette lighter, but it also means that I can't plug my sat-nav in at the same time. Did buy one of those twin outlet adaptors from Halfords, but it's shite due to the location of the standard cigarette lighter - if I try to use it, I end up knocking it everytime I change to 2nd, 4th or reverse gears & it cuts the power. Not a problem for the sat nav, but it sends the little man's DVD back to the beginning.

Reckon it could be mounted either into the rear of the centre console or into the coin slots behind the standard one. Any suggestions why this might not work?

that would be easy mate. yes get a feed from the main socket .

but depending on what ou have pluged in you may need to up the fuse rating ,,,

in fact you could use this and retro fit it to the pos and neg wires that run to the cig socket . that would be easy. and run it neatly under console to back

That looks even better actually. Thing is, I'd just be lazy with that & plug it in & run it alongside the seat. Kind of liked the idea of trying to make a factory looking extra socket.

I've got a 4 socket one that's powered by splitting the feed to the main lighter, it's mounted up under the radio. It's a throwback to the days when I had phone charger, PDA charger, GPS reciever, hands-free kit and the kids' dual screen DVD all running at the same time....

Now I have a smartphone that's replaced my old phone and PDA, with built in GPS, and I can never be arsed to put the DVD on for the kids

it would take only 10 minutes to install that .
you could tuck the wires under console pull through cig lighter socket while you connect them to the main wire . tuck it all in down side of console and run it to back/

once soldered the 2 wires to them main 2 simply plug cig socket back in its normal place

You couid just loop the feed off the front one,
but if you did that ithink it be best only too use one Socket at a time not sure if it wouid overload if they was both used at the same time,

Nah, anything you plug into it is gonna draw a lot less current than a fag lighter.

Edit: Unless you're thinking of running an inverter off it....

Most I would use on it is the DVD player for the little man & the sat-nav charger. Would have to think of a place & method of fixing it in situ though.

Can't see any problem looping it off the front one, (illumination too).

Don't be tempted to put a bigger fuse in it though.

if all are full it may need a bigger fuse (may) but sat nav chargers dont draw much anyway. ive burst my fuse a few times with air compressor

sat nav chargers and dvd players are individually fused ..

i have 4 extra ones mounted under the front seats 2 pointing forward, two backwards, running off the main one, it involved taking out the centre console to thread the wires, but its very well hidden, so i can charge my phone and use the satnav at the same time, and should any passenger want theres a socket for them.

Just read this thread for the first time. Don't even think about putting in a higher rating fuse in. To do it safely you have to uprate the circuit wiring to match the new fuse.

why what would happen ? if you did put a higher fuse in ?

why would the wiring need changing ? its not like it will draw 10times more current just because you have put a higher fuse in
