highlander wrote:+1 from me on that one too - I'm not a CCNA (yet) but am working a real job where I design, provision, and maintain enterprise-scale networks based on high-end Cisco network equipment (everything from Cisco 800-series SOHO routers to Cisco C3945 voice/WAN gateways, from tiny Catalyst 2940 switches right up to Catalyst 6509V-E multi-layer chassis switches). I'm also involved in working on CallManager 7, Unity 5, and Unity Connection. You got Cisco questions, I'll try to answer them - and if I can't, it will help me too because I will research the answer :)

The CCNA is a great qualification in the industry to get your foot in the door.

I did it a couple of years ago but it was on the new 802 syllabus, and while I am no longer working with networking software if you need any help at all give me a shout.

Cheers guys, I know where to come for help then :D
Currently just doing the CCNA Discovery which is the first module. It's whats helped me to decide to go into networking. Don't know too much but know subnetting, Routing protocols (Rip (V1&V2), EIGRP etc), VLANS and stuff like that. I can setup basic home networks etc. Getting my hands on a Cisco 6400 Router (I think it's 6400 anyway) so hopefully can have a play with that. Not a fan of the CLI stuff but sure I'l get used to it. Most my work is done on Cisco Packet Tracer, we haven't even been taught how to plug into the routers and use terminal but there we go.

CLI is important, though its a fairly logical OS

username
password
en
enable password
<command>
etc.

My tip would be, if you have a spare fairly powerful computer, run GNS. This runs on top of dynamips and if you can obtain the IOS (not iOS) images (from Cisco), you can emulate routers and switches and can effectively build your own virtual network.

Was a tremendous help when I did mine, as while I was working with routers and switches, this was a great "sandbox" without worrying about breaking anything / having to scramble into the server room with a console cable :cheesy:

On the subject of EuroCarParts, always liked them but do they do Japanese parts? Or should I ring JapaneseCarParts for brakes? :)

My tip would be, if you have a spare fairly powerful computer, run GNS.

Have you used Packet Tracer? You can basically design and setup a fully blown network on it. Even allows you to do pretend CLI to program the routers. I'd much rather be plugging stuff in and doing it properly, but considering I'm the only one in my class going into networking, it gives you an idea what to expect from it.
