spare key
I have a 2002 '52' plate 406 hdi 110 estate and when i bought the car privately it came with just 1 key and no 'blue card' in the handbook,i had to take the company Pug Boxer to the main dealer for a service today and when i was there i asked about a spare key for the 406,when i picked myself up of the floor i got the parts bloke to repeat the price,160-180 quid for a 'plip' key or 100 quid for a standard key, bloody hell !!.Does anyone out there know of a cheaper alternative or another way of getting a spare key

Re: spare key
No, I think £100 will be about as low as it gets, its to do with the imobilser transponder and rip off dealers.
Can you try the previous owner?

Re: spare key
The previous owner bought it from a garage 4 1/2 years ago and the spare was'nt supplied to them, previous to them it was a Peugeot lease vehicle so i have no way of finding the original owners details,if i want a spare i'll just have to bite the bullet and pay i suppose,i was wondering if one of those mobile auto electrician/lock specialists could reprogramme a secondhand key as you see loads on ebay and also new spare blades.

Re: spare key
You can avoid £25 of the cost, (for recovering the 4-digit code off the card), by joining the DigitalKaos forum & looking for 'Vin to PIN' - someone will look it up for you.
With PP2000 (& the PIN code), you can get your car's ecu to 'learn' a new plip, (or plips), but you probably need a matching 2nd hand pair, possibly from a scrappy.
As regards the physical key blade, getting a duplicate cut is straightforward, (AFAIK).

Re: spare key
Same as lozz, I paid £35 for a plain (non remote) key from Timpsons at Sainsburys.
Previously bought a remote key of e-bay as my only remote key had missing switches, swapped the transponder but can't sync it to the car. Starts OK, just the remote locking still no good
so I went for a plain spare

Re: spare key
The company iuse just puts your key in a machine,
if your cheaky enough and watch them it puts up a number,
if they carnt get the machine to put out anumber theycome out to your car and sort it from there,
luckily theyve always been able to sort me a keys with no hastles,
they cut and code keys for main agents so the main agents must make a Few quid out of them

Re: spare key
Getting a spare key is expensive...I had to do just the same. I dont know how so many people get away with selling a car with just one key nowdays...but here is my advice. If you think its difficult and expensive now to get a spare key when you don't really need it.....imagine the trouble and expense when you do...maybe on holiday miles away from a dealer....or midnight in a dodgy area.!!
Re: spare key
